Mother Who Had 3-Year-Old Son ‘Sweat Out’ Illness Charged In His Death

Saynab Abdullahi Dahir, a 35-year-old mother from Minnesota, has been charged with manslaughter two years after the shocking death of her son. Adnan Abdullahi, 3, died in the hospital nine days after he was rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest. The young boy collapsed while at a park with his mother and siblings.

The EMTs responding to the 911 call noted that Adnan was malnourished to the point his ribs were showing. He also had several missing or broken teeth and was dehydrated. She told the police that her son had been sick and she took him to the park to “sweat out” the illness.

His mother was later thrown out of his hospital room after staff noticed her messing with the machines. Additionally, the staff alleged that the mother was interfering with the boy’s recovery.

She allegedly “manipulated his jaw to make him bite his own tongue, pushed on his chest, putting pressure on his airway and rubbing his throat,” according to the police report.

Adnan Abdullahi died on June 13, 2023, nine days after he was admitted to the hospital. The official cause of death was a brain injury due to cardiac arrest. Further tests revealed that the three-year-old also had strep throat, a staph infection, and bronchopneumonia, in addition to malnourishment and a UTI. He only weighed 25 pounds at the time of his death.

Other Children Reveal Further Alleged Abuse

Saynab Abdullahi Dahir had four other children, ages 5, 6, 7, and 9 years old, who were also found malnourished. The father of the children had been out of the country for a family emergency prior to his son’s death. Upon his return to the States, the other four young children were placed in his custody.

He reported to the authorities that all of the children seemed to have difficulty eating and would only eat one spoonful at a time. The police were able to interview the children, who made shocking allegations against their mother.

The mom reportedly forced the children to throw up if she thought they were gaining weight. Furthermore, if any of the children complained about one of the other kids throwing up, they would be forced to throw up as punishment.

Saynab Abdullahi Dahir was arrested in July and charged with second-degree manslaughter and four counts of child endangerment. Her bail was set at $50,000. She was released last month after posting bail but is due back in court on August 6.
