Bringing Up Bates star Carlin Bates Stewart is back with new updates with her grandmother, Mama Jane. The Bates family is currently on a healing journey following the passing of Papa Bill. Gil’s father died on May 19, 2025, while he was in hospice care. It was said that Papa Bill died peacefully, but most of his grandchildren were still brokenhearted from his passing. Bringing Up Bates: Mama Jane’s Cancer Battle
Kelly Jo previously revealed that Mama Jane is undergoing cancer treatment. The Bringing Up Bates star also asked for prayers for her mother-in-law. Mama Jane underwent two surgeries on her nose to remove cancer. But the deadly illness still hasn’t completely disappeared.
Earlier this month, Lawson uploaded a vlog where he and Tiffany visit Mama Jane in South Carolina. Papa Bill was still alive in the vlog, which was taken a few days before he passed. During the video, Lawson revealed that he was taking his grandmother to her cancer treatment session. He also said that it’s taking a toll on Mama Jane’s body, but she’s been a warrior throughout the battle.
Carlin Shares First Glimpse Of Mama Jane Since Papa Bill’s Passing
Carlin Bates Stewart recently took to IG Stories to share the first photos of Mama Jane since Papa Bill’s passing. The Bringing Up Bates star visited her grandmother in South Carolina. She shared a glimpse of her grandparents’ iconic house before finally sharing photos of her kids, Layla and Zade, hanging out with their great-grandmother. Carlin also shared a glimpse of her dad, Gil, relaxing on the porch. This shows that the Bates family is taking extra efforts to watch over Mama Jane now that she’s alone. Carlin didn’t share updates about Mama Jane’s cancer battle. But her big smile shows that she’s doing well amid the difficult treatment.

Aside from Mama Jane, Carlin Bates Stewart also took to IG to share a clip from her final moments with Papa Bill. According to the Bringing Up Bates star, she’d give anything for one more slow evening with her grandfather. She added that the porch hasn’t been the same without him. Carlin continued, “I miss you more than words… but I know you’re swinging in peace now, with Jesus. 🪽”
