Best Flowers To Grow In Shady Areas

As summer begins, people everywhere are looking to make their landscapes welcoming. In doing so, many will be planting flowers. However, not every kind of flower will thrive in all areas of your yard. Some people have areas in their garden or on their porch where no sun hits at all. So, which flowers can you plant that will thrive in shady areas?
There are options for those areas that sunshine just won’t reach. Here are some good ones to choose from that do not require a lot of sunshine.
- Coral bells are green, purple, chartreuse, plum, red, taupe, and coral. The foliage on these plants can burn if they are exposed to too much sunlight. Partial sun and shade are best for good growth.
- Hydrangeas are another flower that will thrive in areas that do not have full sunlight. Too little light will reduce their flower output, but too much sun and heat can wilt the plant. Ideally, they should get morning sun followed by some shade in the afternoon. They will need extra water during those extra hot days.
- Impatiens are pretty flowers that will add great color to any landscape. These plants will bloom to their fullest potential even in heavy shade. However, too much light can wilt them.
They come in many colors, including red, pink, violet, coral, purple, yellow, and white. - Bleeding hearts are gorgeous. They thrive in the shade, and too much light will hurt them. Keep them well watered but not soggy. It’s important to note that bleeding heart is toxic to humans and animals.
- Rhododendron is another flower that will grow well in shady areas. These are also toxic to humans and animals. These flowering shrubs bloom in the spring to early summer, and their root system don’t like to be exposed to heat. Thus, planting them in a shady spot is ideal. Adding some mulch around your shrub will also help to keep the roots cool and retain soil moisture.
- Fuchsia plants are prized for their bright, teardrop-shaped blooms. They need a little light to bloom properly, but they do not like the sunlight in the heat of the day.
- Siberian Bugloss is one of the most perfect flowers for shade. Too much light can burn these plants, and they are also very low-maintenance.
These are just a few of the many plants you can grow in the shady areas of your yard.
