Homeowners generally do not want to deal with spiders invading their house or their gardens. Some spiders can be good for killing other pests, such as mosquitoes and cockroaches. However, there are some people who are severely afraid of these little multi-legged insects. People also worry about using pesticides that can harm children and pets. So, here are 7 safe ways to keep spiders away.

  1. White vinegar is one safe option that can be used to deter spiders from taking up residence in your home. Simply fill a spray bottle with vinegar and spray in cracks, windows, and around doors. Others said, along with vinegar, one can use peppermint oil and water around cracks and hiding spots inside the house. Some will even argue that lemon mixed with water is another good deterrent. The house smells great and has fewer insects, according to some recommendations.
  2. Plants that deter spiders. Believe it or not, there are some plants that deter spiders from building a web. Some of these plants are lavender, mint, eucalyptus, and citronella. They have strong smells that spiders don’t like.
  3. Get rid of debris that spiders can hide in. They like to crawl under rocks and also take cover under leaves and dirt. Getting rid of these things can help keep your areas spider-free.

  4. Spiders will tend to stay where their webs are. If you see a web, get rid of it. They may try to rebuild a time or two, but eventually, they will just give up and move on. Keeping spider webs at bay is another great way to ensure they don’t set up a permanent home.
  5. Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a crumbly material made of fossilized diatoms, a type of protist, and landscapers often sprinkle it on the ground to use it as an insecticide. DE can kill many pests, including spiders.
  6. Keep outdoor lights off. Spiders aren’t really attracted to bright light. However, they do feed on other insects that flock to the light. Some of these other insects are flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. Keeping these bright lights off may keep these insects away. The lights bring insects, and the insects bring the spiders that prey on them.
  7. Fill in cracks with weather caulking. These little insects love to hide in cracks where it’s dark and cool. Filling them can help keep unwanted guests away.
