Whether it be for space or other reasons, some people decide they would rather have a dog who will remain small for their entire lives. There are many dogs to choose from if finding a small best friend is in your future. Here are ten of them to be on the lookout for that would make great companions.

  1. Papillon is a precious little dog and their name means butterfly in French. They will not grow to be more than ten pounds and are one of the smallest breeds in the spaniel family. These dogs are happy and playful. They will keep you on your toes and also provide lots of love.
  2. Dachshunds are small and even come in mini versions. They are affectionately known as wiener dogs. They will stay under 20 pounds and the miniature version weighs less than 11. They are stubborn and sassy, yet one of the most loyal, loving dogs you’ll ever meet.
  3. Maltese dogs are known for being gentle and loving. They are known to be symbols of beauty and grace. These dogs are also able to adapt to their environments, so this makes them perfect for houses or apartments.
  4. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is another precious breed that will stay under 18 pounds. They are affectionate and will also do their best to cheer you up on those rough days. They love to cuddle and will be loyal companions.
  5. Toy Poodle is another breed that will remain small throughout their entire life. They are elegant little dogs but can also be playful. They love learning new tricks and are very smart.
  6. Havanese is another little breed of dog that would make an excellent companion. They weigh seven to thirteen pounds and love to play. These dogs do not shed much and they usually only bark at alarming noises. They will keep their owners entertained and loved.
  7. Bichon Frise is another breed that provides lots of love to its owners. These dogs are always happy and love to entertain and play.
  8. Welsh Corgi is a great choice to get as a small dog breed. They can get up to 30 pounds but they will provide lots of fun and laughs for their owners. They love to be around people and also to play.
  9. Teacup Yorkshire Terrier is a very small breed that will provide lots of love. They weigh between 3 and 7 pounds. With these dogs, sometimes two is better than one. They get lonely rather easily, so it might be best to adopt two together. They also need to be kept busy. If they get too bored, they may resort to doing things they shouldn’t, such as chewing on furniture.
  10. Miniature Schnauzer is another small breed that will provide a lot of entertainment. They love to play and be stimulated. They are friendly and full of energy. These dogs are also quick learners and have a great work ethic, loving to be part of the action going on around them.
