Bride, 6, Forced To Wed Man, 45, As His Third Wife
A six-year-old girl was forced to marry a forty-five-year-old man and become his third wife. This is not the first story that has been told recently regarding child brides, and it likely won’t be the last. So, where did this happen, and was it stopped? Keep reading for more details.

Getting married is supposed to be a beautiful and memorable occasion. It is also about consent and starting a fabulous new life and chapter. Unfortunately, that was not the case for a six-year-old girl who resides in Afghanistan. She was forced to marry a forty-five-year-old man and become his third wife. It is alleged that he had two brides as it was, and then handed over a large chunk of money for the minor. As of now, the groom and the bride’s dad have been arrested. Yet, no charges have been filed as of now, but this has turned the stomachs of everyone.
The Taliban is known for condoning these underage marriages. However, they did not want this union to go through, but rather wait until the bride was nine. So, in three years, she could be a good wife, which is still extremely off-putting. Mahbob, who spends his days as an activist, shared this insight:
“There are many families in our village who have given away their daughters for money. No one helps them. People are desperate.”
For many, this is the only way to keep their families afloat, but the sacrifice is immense. In Iraq, it is legal to wed at nine. There were snaps of children being saved as they were supposed to engage in underage marriage. A young girl from Yemeni was married to a much older man. At ten years old, she was able to escape back to her father.

In Pakistan, a seven-year-old boy, Mohammad Waseem, was to marry Nisha, only four. Fortunately, authorities intervened and were able to save both of them. This happened in 2008, and it does not appear that much has changed in regard to child protection.
Speaking Out
Marrying little girls off can be detrimental to their mental health. Although being a wife at the age of nine does offer financial stability for a family, it also steals a girl’s youth. However, in various countries, that does not matter much, and the laws allow this to continue happening. Fortunately, it does appear that divorce is possible. A ten-year-old was at a courthouse accompanied by her lawyer and husband to sign the papers. Once news of the six-year-old bride emerged, readers were sickened. They immediately spoke up regarding what was happening:
- They are pedophiles!! They need to be executed!
- This is not Muslim… it is Taliban (Shia) allowing it… it is against the Quran… While the man may marry whom ever… the child is being denied the right to choose… and is too immature to agree… she would be considered able to choose if she has reached puberty…
A lot of people spoke out against what was happening; however, it likely won’t change, given that she had to be nine to get married. That is a heavy topic, but hopefully it can be rectified in the near future.
