Lorena Gallo, formerly Lorena Bobbitt, made headlines in the 1990s when she allegedly severed her husband John’s genitals. The case, which received international attention at the time, continues to be recounted in various true crime media. Even in the years since, many have wondered what happened to Lorena and where she is now.
Lorena Bobbitt’s Case Made International News In 1993
Lorena, who was born and raised in South America, married John Bobbitt in 1989. The two were living in Virginia at the time of the infamous alleged crime.
On June 23, 1993, Lorena reportedly severed her husband John Wayne Bobbitt’s penis with a knife. During the ensuing trial, Lorena claimed that John raped and attacked her on different occasions. For his part, John denied the allegations.

The international press coverage of the incident led to John and Lorena becoming household names. According to The New York Times, John was acquitted of charges of marital sexual assault and Lorena was acquitted of her charge by reason of temporary insanity.
Lorena was also required to spend time in a mental hospital. She was later released within 45 days.
Lorena’s Story Had Been Shared In Different Media
In the years that followed, John and Lorena continued to appear in pop culture. Their story had also been recounted in various docuseries, books, and podcasts.
Lorena herself had even been involved with a made-for-television movie that revolved around the case. During the premiere of the 2000 Lifetime film, I Was Lorena Bobbitt, Lorena spoke with Entertainment Tonight.

At the time, Lorena shared that, “People used to judge me before, saying that they don’t believe my story. To tell the story again is more than a blessing, to me it is an opportunity to tell it right.”
In 2018, Lorena also spoke about her story with Time. At the time, it was shared she was living in Manassas with her partner and daughter.
In 2019, a true crime series based on the case was released on Amazon Prime Video. Jordan Peele served as an executive producer.
Lorena Has Talked About How She Felt The Media Handled The Infamous Case
Lorena was also said to have founded the eponymous nonprofit, the Lorena Gallo Foundation, which focuses on domestic violence and sexual assault prevention. Speaking with the publication, she shared, “One of my missions is to educate the public and young women about the red flags in dating an abuser. I go to colleges and talk to sororities.”
Lorena was also asked about her thoughts on how the media handled the infamous case at the time. She shared, “It was sad because they were more concerned about ratings, more than anything. They were more concerned about his penis instead of domestic violence.”

For his part, following the trial, John went on to have a short career in the porn industry. He also served as a recurring guest on The Howard Stern Show.
According to People, Since the case, John had also been arrested several times and served jail time for violence against two different women. He has also denied these allegations.
Back in 2024, John also spoke with The Sun. At the time, he shared that he had been diagnosed with toxic peripheral polyneuropathy. Attributing his condition to contamination at Camp Lejeune, he claimed his condition impacted his marriage.
At the time, John shared, “I wasn’t behaving the way I should have. Maybe I would have made better decisions if my cognitive functioning wasn’t distorted by the chemicals.” In addition, his condition has caused him nerve damage and even led to his toes being amputated, which he claimed left him unable to work.
