10 Appliances You Should Remember To Unplug

It’s always important to conserve energy, both for the environment and your bank account. Even something as simple as remembering to unplug a device can make a big difference in the long run. In fact, some devices could even be dangerous if left plugged in for too long.
Certain Appliances Simply Have A Proper Time & Place To Be Used
There are many practical reasons to keep specific appliances unplugged when not in use. Faulty wiring could easily cause fires. In fact, certain devices could also have their own individual dangers.

- Toasters: A toaster can always malfunction, causing the crumbs stuck inside to catch on fire. These mishaps can be prevented at times if the toaster is kept unplugged when not in use.
- Microwaves: Even when a microwave isn’t being used to cook or reheat food, its clock and sensors still require power. Keeping it unplugged saves energy and prevents power surges.
- Laptop Chargers: Not only is it wasteful to keep a laptop charger plugged in when not in use, it can also shorten its lifespan and cause it to overheat.
- Space Heaters: A mobile heater can keep a user warm during cold times. However, they can also easily start a fire if broken or faulty. Thanks to this, it’s best to only keep it plugged in when in use.
- Hair Straightener: Hair straighteners are well-known for staying hot, even after they’ve been turned off. Thanks to this, keeping it plugged in when not in use especially makes them dangerous.
Lights & Network Connections Can Still Deplete Energy When Not In Use
- Television: Modern TVs are often designed to stay in a standby mode when not in use. While this is meant to make it easier to turn it back on, it also takes up a lot of energy.
- Printers: When not in use, printers can use a lot of energy, from lights to network connections. It’s best to keep them unplugged when not in use. Sometimes, it also just pays to go paperless.
- Electric Shavers: Electric shavers offer convenience compared to more traditional razors. However, their charging station can draw a lot of power. Even if they take a while to charge, it’s best to plan when to use them beforehand to cut back on energy.
- Fans: Electric fans help people keep cool in warm, arid climates. However, they can actually become a fire hazard as they collect dirt and debris over time, especially if they overheat. Modern fans also often use lights that draw even more power.
- Holiday Lights: Holiday lights look beautiful and can really light up a neighborhood. However, it’s important, and in good taste, to take them down when the holiday season comes to an end.

What are some appliances you often keep plugged in? What are some ways you have to cut back on energy?
