Where The Crawdads Sing is the latest book-to-film summer movie release. Although the film wasn’t wildly popular with critics, audiences say differently.
Moviegoers will take a step back in time to the 1960s and explore the Carolina marshland through the eyes of Catherine Danielle “Kya” Clark. The film is based on a book of the same name by Delia Owens and sets up a crime story that’s haunting and memorable.
Where The Crawdads Sing is a mystery/drama story that’s easy to get swept up in
Against all odds, Kya Clark managers to learn from the wilderness and survive in the marshes after her family abandons her there. But she’s not completely alone. The local general store owners keep a watchful eye on her. As Kya grows into an adult, people start to know her as “the marsh girl.”
Although Kya’s a bit reclusive, she really enjoys art and manages to find romance with one of the local boys. After that romance fizzles out, she strikes up another romance with an abusive man. When his body turns up, the town quickly points fingers at “the marsh girl” and Kya is on trial for her very life.
Where The Crawdads Sing has a 33% on the Tomatometer but has a 94% approval rating from audiences. Even though critics largely didn’t care for the film, it’s winning over audience members fairly easily.
Many critics say that Daisy Edgar-Jones (Kya) gives one of her best performances yet, but felt that the film overall was just lacking something.
“Those who do not already have a strong emotional commitment to the story are likely to come away finding the film superficial at best and morally bankrupt at worst,” writes Nell Minow on the Rotten Tomatoes website.
Where The Crawdads Sing probably won’t win any major awards, but it’s still a thrilling and engaging story with a sharp twist at the end.
When will the movie be available to stream?
Movie lovers that don’t necessarily want to make the trip to theaters can always wait for the movie to come out on Netflix. It’s widely believed that Where The Crawdads Sing will hit Netflix in late 2022, possibly November.
Fans of the book really seem to love the film, so eager moviegoers can always pick up a copy before seeing the movie. Ultimately, it’s a great movie choice for adults that are looking for a fun night out. Critics may not love the movie, but it’s still pretty entertaining.
