The last time Downton Abbey fans had a chance to see the Crawley family on the silver screen was in 2019. But now, Downton Abbey: A New Era is out for everyone’s viewing pleasure.
The film wraps up the series nicely as the family and their servants prepare to enter the 1930s and explore an ever-changing world. Downton Abbey: A New Era is popular with critics and moviegoers alike — and it’s not too hard to see why.
Downton Abbey: A New Era picks up where the first film left off
Fans that haven’t seen the first film definitely should before heading to the theaters. It picks up very shortly after the first Downton Abbey film left off — and there are important characters that were only just introduced in the first movie.
The plot of the second Downton Abbey film revolves around the mysterious youth of the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley. For some seemingly unexplainable reason, she’s inherited a beautiful villa in the south of France. Since Violet is in her 80s and has no real plans to use the villa, she leaves it to Sybbie, her eldest great-granddaughter.
While half the family goes to explore the villa, the rest stay home to deal with a production studio that really wants to make a film at Downton Abbey. The more traditionalist characters object to the film, but the family needs the money. Downton Abbey is in need of repairs due to its age and there just isn’t any extra money to fix things. The ever-practical Mary manages to convince the family that the film is really in everyone’s best interests. Soon, the house is filled with movie stars and a full-scale production crew.
There’s definitely a lot to love about this direct sequel to the 2019 film.
Rotten Tomatoes rates the film quite well with an 85% on the Tomatometer. And it earned an audience approval rating of 97%. Needless to say, it’s doing quite well with the Downton Abbey fanbase right now.
Before fans head to the theater, they can check out the fun trailer and get excited:
What about the future of the Crawley family on the silver screen?
Right now, there are no current plans for a third Downton Abbey movie. However, the creators have stated they are willing to revisit those plans if there is a strong demand for one.
But many fans feel as if A New Era wrapped up the series quite nicely. If a third film does happen, it would almost certainly be without a few fan-favorite characters. So is it even really possible?
It’s too soon to say for sure, but the creators are almost certainly mulling it over now that the film is doing so well.
