Here is everything you need to know about the Superbowl 2021 halftime show. As fans know, The Weeknd will headline the event. However, the “Blinding Lights” singer kept quiet about what he has planned. It’s unclear if he will sing a medley of his hits, or if he will only perform songs from his latest album.

So far, the singer said there won’t be any special guests. He confirmed during an interview on the NFL Network on Thursday that there aren’t any surprise performances lined up. He also promised a “family-friendly” event. The Super Bowl halftime show has been known to cause controversy when it comes to its headliners.

What The Weeknd revealed about his halftime show

Previously, the Recording Academy snubbed The Weeknd in every category at the 2021 Grammy Awards. But being asked to perform at the Super Bowl was a big accomplishment for the Toronto native. This comes after an incredible year following the release of his fourth album, After Hours. His two singles “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The album also ended up on the Billboard 200 and is certified platinum along with smashing streaming records. Of course, that’s not the only thing happening at the Super Bowl. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play the Kansas City Chiefs on CBS. Before his interview, The Weeknd talked about fulfilling his lifelong dreams.

“We all grow up watching the world’s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl, and one can only dream of being in that position,” the singer said in a statement released by the NFL, per Us Weekly. “I’m humbled, honored, and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year.”

During his NFL press conference on Thursday, February 4, he said most of his performance will take place in the stands.

“Due to the COVID and for the safety of the players and the workers, we kind of built the stage within the stadium,” the “Starboy” singer said, according to Page Six. “We’re also using the field as well, but we wanted to kind of do something that we’ve never done before.”

Seeking inspiration from Diana Ross

During the press conference, the Weeknd said that Diana Ross’s 1996 halftime show is his favorite. He confessed to watching it “over and over again” while rehearsing for his own.

“She’s just so glamorous,” he exclaimed. “The show just makes me smile. She has a great exit with the helicopter – when she lands in the middle of the field, grabs onto it, and flies out into the clouds. I wish I could’ve done that. I wish I thought of it, to be honest.”

The Weeknd aspires to have such a great show like the legendary singer. And he wants to keep it PG-friendly. He said he will “definitely” be “respectful to the viewers at home.” However, he will still continue the storyline of the red suit character he created as part of his After Hours era.
