Former NFL player Mel Owens joined The Golden Bachelor to find love after a divorce. His marriage to his first wife ended in 2020 after nearly twenty years together. He knew exactly what he was looking for, but the ladies he met on the show turned that upside down for him. He opened up about what viewers can expect in the surprising end of his season.

Season 1 Golden Bachelor Stars Compare Mel To Gerry Turner

Through the first season of The Golden Bachelor, fans gushed over how refreshing it was to see a season without drama. The seniors sought love with a wholesome urgency. But a shocking report about Gerry Turner’s past came out right before the season finale that changed some fans’ perspective of the former restaurateur.

Public opinion shifted even more when Gerry Turner’s marriage to his final rose winner, Theresa Nist, ended after just three months. They divorced in 2024. Since then, he’s gotten engaged to another woman and written a bombshell book about his brief marriage to Theresa.

Kathy Swarts and Susan Noles were among the contestants on the first season of The Golden Bachelor. They seemed to throw their support behind Theresa Nist after Gerry’s harsh comments. They shared their true thoughts about him on an episode of the Almost Famous podcast.

Kathy Swarts said, “You can have a lawyer, a football player, a guy who can string together sentences, or you can go pick cotton in a corn maze in Indiana. I don’t know. What do you want to do?”

The pair also made fun of Gerry Turner’s house on a lake in Hudson, Indiana. “He said he lives on a lake. It’s like a swan boat, paddle wheel thing,” Kathy joked.

Mel Owens Talks Surprise Ending To Season

Mel Owens might be a step above Gerry Turner, but he has his own issues. He said before the season started that he didn’t want any contestants over the age of 60. The casting department didn’t listen and cast women well over 60 on The Golden Bachelor.

During a recent rose ceremony, Mel Owens admitted his mistake. “I thought that I wanted a certain type of woman and I still do and they’re right here before me: beautiful, accomplished, brilliant, spiritual,” he told the final three women before sending Debbie Siebers home.

His final two women are Peg Munson from Las Vegas, Nevada, and Cindy Cullers from Austin, Texas. He spilled to Us Weekly about the surprising ending to his season.

Mel Owns predictions women

Mel Owens isn’t on the ABC show for the drama. “No, I’m not gonna fall in love twice,” he told the outlet about the common dramatic moment in the franchise.

He did, however, make a pros and cons list that ultimately wasn’t helpful. I wanted to write down my first impressions: the goods, the bads, the neutrals. It really didn’t sway me, but I could still look at it,” he explained.

He teased that the end of The Golden Bachelor finale will surprise viewers.

“You won’t believe how we get there, not mechanically, but how we get there emotionally. There’s some movement and twists and turns,” he said about the dramatic conclusion to the season.

He stopped short of confirming his relationship status, but Us Weekly noted that Mel Owens lit up when talking about the ending. What do you think that means?
