While reality stars appear to have perfect lives on television, they face the same struggles as the rest of us. A fan-favorite Bachelorette star found out earlier this year that she has Stage 4 breast cancer after a routine exam. She’s been sharing every step of the battle for her life with fans, even the bad parts.
Katie Thurston is not giving up the fight despite the Stage 4 diagnosis. “I refuse to view this as a terminal illness or a death sentence,” she said during a recent interview on Good Morning America.
She shared the optimistic news that her breast cancer treatment is working so far, and the tumor is shrinking. Katie Thurston has become an advocate for breast cancer survivors since her diagnosis. Her husband, comedian Jeff Arcuri, is donating part of the ticket sales from his current tour to breast cancer research.
Katie Thurston Finally Feels Like A Real New Yorker
Katie Thurston was in the middle of moving from San Diego, California, to New York City when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. A change in health insurance was partly why she was initially misdiagnosed as Stage 3, and how it was discovered that she was actually Stage 4.
With all the medical issues going on and her husband leaving the country on tour, Katie Thurston struggled to acclimate to the Big Apple. So, she was excited to share something silly that made her finally feel like a real New Yorker.
She took to Instagram to share a pic of a lantern fly that she’d killed. “Killed my first lantern fly. Really starting to feel like a New Yorker,” she wrote on the photo. The killing of the innocent creature didn’t sit right with one of the Bachelorette star’s followers.

Having Stage 4 breast cancer doesn’t make you immune to social media trolls, as Katie Thurston is finding out. First, there was a horrible death hoax rumor circulating on social media. Then, the Bachelorette star came under fire for killing a bug.
“What would Blake say? You should know how it feels to want to live,” the fan scolded. Katie Thurston was understandably shocked by the DM. She shared the DM and her response with the text, “Their last sentence is wild.”
Katie responded by telling the follower that Blake would support what she did because lantern flies are an invasive species that can damage crops and the environment in the U.S. “Enjoy this education with your judgement,” Katie clapped back.
