Whales are known for their size, but a recent story proved that they can also be gentle giants. A photographer recently shared a story at sea in which a humpback whale appeared on the scene to rescue him. However, things weren’t quite what they appeared to be.

A Photographer Recently Shared A Touching Story While Getting Close & Personal With Whales

Jono Allen is an underwater photographer who helps capture images of the deep for the world above to enjoy. The Australian native has traveled to around ten different countries for his job.

Allen doesn’t just film the whales from afar, but often finds himself working right alongside them. In fact, he shared a memorable encounter with one during a recent interview.

Speaking with People, Allen shared, “I have been bumped, rolled, whacked over, cuddled by whales, I’ve had whales follow me to the boat.” Noting that whales also have their own language, he mused it is one he has mastered himself.

Allen added, “I try to capture the feeling and the emotion that they give me to create portraits of their personalities and portray them in the way that I see them in those moments. Not look at them as an animal, but as a living sentient creature and try and express that through my work.”

The photographer assured he wasn’t naive to stories about people getting injured by whales. However, he felt “they’re so gentle and they’re so peaceful” in their own element.

Jono Allen Also Shared The Moment That ‘Hooked’ Him Into The Idea Of Swimming With Whales

Allen once shared a story in which a mother humpback whale came to help him, believing he was unable to breathe. He recounted, “I was swimming in the water and this mother humpback saw me and thought that was something wrong, and she came over to me and started trying to lift me up out of the water so I could breathe.”

As Allen noted, this is something mother humpbacks do with their children. He explained, “When their calves are born, they can’t swim, so they lift them up to breathe.”

Allen would have loved to allow the mother whale to bring him to the surface. However, he realized it wouldn’t be safe. As he noted, “I just couldn’t do it,” though he admitted he “would’ve loved” for that to have happened.

Allen shared that he originally didn’t think swimming with whales was possible until a friend suggested it. Interestingly, it was an encounter with a mother and calf that helped him get “hooked.”

The photographer recalled, “At the end of the day, this mum and calf humpback come up to the boat. And it’s like sunset, and the calf is jumping and it’s splashing all around us. And that mum’s coming up and looking at us, and I was just mind-blown.” He then decided to get into the water, and this wouldn’t be the last time.
