Daycare Owner Shoots Absusive Ex

Sending your child to daycare can be scary, but most parents have faith in the staff. If something suspicious comes up, they try to handle and address it. Shanteari Young owned a Maryland daycare, where she took pride in the daily operations. Moreover, she wanted it to be a safe space for all of the kids who came in, but that sadly did not happen. Young learned that her then-husband, Baltimore City cop James Weems, was sexually abusing the children at her daycare. She believed that he was doing these unthinkable things, so in 2022, she shot him.

She was then sentenced to four years in prison, which some felt was way too harsh for what he had done. Yet, were they just allegations, or was there further proof ahead? Young went on a business trip with her husband to confront him. She has made it clear that she does not want anyone to hide horrific crimes like this. More so, she believes they were not brought to light in the past, and she is aiming to change that. After all was said and done, there was a solid case against Weems.

He was found to have used Shanteari Young’s daycare van to assault a ten-year-old girl. Weems is now serving a life sentence, and Young has divorced him plus changed her last name. She seems to want nothing to do with this man other than to spread the word about abuse at daycares. In the end of it all, Young is thankful for everyone who stood beside her. More so, she is ready to get back to her life, even though her next stop is a halfway house.

Moving On

Shanteari Young is ready to move on and start a fresh, new life after serving her time. Prosecutors had only felt she needed two years behind bars, but that did not happen. Luckily, many wrote to Young and kept her spirit alive. Young also testified in her now ex-husband’s case. However, she could not let it slip that she had shot him for what he had done wrong. Amid her release, Young had this message:

“It’s a good thing that we’re able to start helping children and bring more awareness to sexual predators who are out there—even those that have on the blue uniform or are within certain areas where we would’ve assumed that these people wouldn’t have done anything.”

Although violence is never the answer, Young took control of a horrific situation that could have ended much differently. She protected her daycare children and others who could have fallen prey to James Weems.

What do you think of her sentence, and are you happy Shanteari Young is now free? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
