Attorney Generals from 18 states have written to President Biden and requested that he save the Trump-era ICE program. President Trump’s administration created Operation Talon and the program was in initial implementation during the final weeks of his presidency. This program was created to target s*x offenders that are living in the United States illegally.
President Biden has signed multiple executive orders effectively ending many of the programs and projects created by President Trump. However, with President Biden looking to “reform” and “modernize” America’s immigration system many Attorney Generals fear Operation Talon may be permanently canceled. Eric Schmitt, Missouri Attorney General, penned a letter to President Biden along with seventeen of his peers for the President to reinstate Operation Talon. It reads:
“The cancellation of this program effectively broadcasts to the world that the United States is now a sanctuary jurisdiction for s*xual predators. This message creates a perverse incentive for foreign s*xual predators to seek to enter the United States illegally and assault more victims, both in the process of unlawful migration and after they arrive.”
What is Operation Talon?
President Biden issued an executive order in January placing a 100-day hold on deportations currently in process. Administrators within DHS are reviewing their current policies and will make recommendations to President Biden. The hold allows only four exceptions for deportation during the 100 days. The exceptions are for noncitizens found to be a threat to the U.S., including spies or terrorists; immigrants who were not in the U.S. before Nov. 1; those who voluntarily waive the right to be in the country; and anyone the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement determines specifically must leave the country. These exceptions; however, do not cover those individuals set for deportation that have been convicted of criminal activity in the United States.
Operation Talon was created under President Trump and it targeted illegal immigrants with convictions for s*x crimes. These convictions include rape, assault and child molestation. DHS suspended Operation Talon after President Biden issued his 100-day hold. The suspension might only be temporary as DHS awaits new instruction from President Biden’s administration.
ICE is so much more
The Immigrations and Customs Enforcement division of the Department of Homeland Security is constantly under scrutiny. ICE is responsible for the arrest and deportation of illegal immigrates but they do so much more than that. For instance, just this week ICE was part of a joint operation responsible for the seizure of over 460,000 counterfeit N95 masks. The masks were set for distribution to frontline workers in the Seattle area. This act of customs enforcement protected Seattle’s frontline workers and kept them from potential exposure due to faulty equipment.
Last year alone ICE made over 103,000 arrests of illegal immigrants. Of those arrested, 90% had criminal convictions or pending criminal convictions. President Biden’s hold on deportation has potentially prevented these individuals from deportation. These people might even remain in the United States and continue to commit crimes. Sanctuary cities already experience issues with individuals that commit crimes but have illegal status. There have been several instances where illegal immigrants have been released after committing violent crimes. Sanctuary cities do not hold these individuals in detention facilities because of their illegal status, despite the threat they pose to the public.
What does President Biden have planned?
President Biden has been focusing on many things during his first weeks in office. He has promised new policies set to create sweeping change to current immigration policies. President Biden said, “The last four years of misguided policies have exacerbated the already broken immigration system and highlighted the critical need for reform.”
