Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved to California in August of 2020, but the move was not without difficulty. The couple decided to step down from official duties as senior members of the royal family in January of 2020. And this decision was met with a lot of tension between all the members of the royal family. Harry and Meghan’s choice to “effectively leave” the family caused a divide between all the family members. The fallout was especially difficult between. Harry and William. Tom Bradby said Harry “is heartbroken by the situation with his family”.
Stepping Down
The original January 8, 2020, joint statement from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stating their intention to step away from the royal family was a shock to many. However, their friends were not especially surprised. And after Harry & Meghan: An African Journey aired the reasons for their decision became obvious. Harry and Meghan’s relationship has been under the media microscope for years. And although the Suits actress is used to the press the abuse she took was intense.
As the couple continued to be in the spotlight, Harry noticed similarities between Meghan’s situation and his mother’s. He was and is determined to always protect his wife and family. The couple even filed a lawsuit against a British newspaper for publishing Meghan’s private correspondence. Harry defended his wife calling the actions of the press “bullying” tactics that were unacceptable. “There comes a point when the only thing to do is to stand up to this behaviour because it destroys people and destroys lives”.
But stepping down had challenges the couple might not have expected. When Harry made the announcement of his intent to step down, Prince William was furious. Although the brothers were always close they barely spoke to one another. Many insiders feared the division was beyond repair. Kaite Nicholl reported, “William […] was so angry at this brother”. She explained William’s frustration and disappointment over Harry’s handling of the situation. No member of the royal family has ever voluntarily left, so the choice was a completely foreign concept.
Prince Harry moves forward
Stepping away was hard because the royal family is more than a mere family. Harry said it best in his statement by referring to the family as an “institution”. Tom Bradby even called the royal family “a firm”. So, the situation became more complicated. “I think the whole thing has just been incredibly painful, that is obvious to everyone. It is painful all-round, painful for everyone, difficult to manage,” Bradby said. As Harry and Meghan continue to navigate their chosen course, they are creating a new uncharted path for future royals.
But family is always family, and though they may fight love has a way of working things out. And after the holidays a reconciliation between Harry and William appears possible. Harry noted, “But look, we’re brothers, we’ll always be brothers. We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I’ll always be there for him and as I know he’ll always be there for me”.
And though the situation between Harry and his family is difficult he does not regret his decision. Bradby said, I think they are pretty happy actually, but I think they wrestle with their position in life.”
Another insider confirmed this, telling People that Harry “doesn’t have any regrets” and “is really happy” to be in California. “He and Meghan are enjoying their new life […] being a normal family and having the freedom to make their own decisions”.
