Kate Middleton, Prince William Go For A Walk Amid New COVID-19 Strain

Kate Middleton and Prince William already broke the UK lockdown rules. The Cambridge family took a walk with Prince Edward’s family despite the new COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. Also, there’s a new strain of the virus that’s spreading rapidly within the region.

Their Christmas outing has been met with controversy. The couple and their children visited the Luminate trail walk on Queen Elizabeth’s Sandringham estate on Sunday, December 20. They were joined by William’s uncle Prince Edward, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and their two children.

The U.K. has since enforced the “Rule of Six” amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Did the Duke and Duchess make a royal boo-boo?

In the photos obtained by Daily Mail, Prince William and Kate Middleton walked with Prince Edward’s family along the Christmas-themed trail. Luminate Sandringham is a mile-long path through the woodlands and Country Park at Sandringham. In a normal year, it’s open to locals through mid-January. But this isn’t a normal year, there’s an ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

And there’s a new strain of the virus in the U.K. This strain spreads more rapidly than the previous version. Both groups arrived separately and didn’t intend on meeting up. It just happened to be a coincidence. The group congregated just as the government set a limit on people who can gather outside.

“The two families were given separate consecutive slots to visit the trail just before it opened to the general public,” royal sources told the Daily Mail. “They arrived and departed in their own family groups. As anyone with young children know, there were moments on the 90-minute walk where it was difficult to keep the two family groups apart, particularly at bottlenecks on the trail.”

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Christmas plans

Entertainment Chronicle previously reported that the couple’s Christmas plans changed after the COVID-19 restrictions were put into place for most of England. The Cambridges are spending Christmas Day at their country home of Anmer Hall in Norfolk, per People. Since Norfolk is in a Tier 2 lockdown, only six people can meet outdoors if they are not from the same household.

Most of the U.K. is in a Tier 4 lockdown, which bans households from getting together and hosting overnight stays. A travel ban is also in effect. There is no exit or entry from the Tier 4 regions. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge previously came under fire for their three-day royal train tour earlier this month.

The two visited communities in England, Scotland, and Wales. The criticism hasn’t stopped them from celebrating the holidays. Kate and William also brought their children to a performance that celebrated essential workers and their families. The royals walked the red carpet without face masks.

However, William and Kate put theirs on once inside the event. William received criticism when The Sun reported he contracted COVID-19 in April. It was around the same time that his father, Prince Charles, tested positive for the virus. While William wanted to hide his positive diagnosis, it came back to “haunt him,” Richard Palmer told the Daily Express.
