‘Time’ Selects Joe Biden And Kamala Harris As Person Of The Year

Nikole Behrens

2020 is coming to a close, and that means it’s time for Time to pick a new Person of the Year. This year, the honor went to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. ET reports this is the first time a Vice President took the title.

For months leading up to election night, no one was exactly certain who would win. Polls projected Biden as the winner, but the world saw in 2016 that the polls can be wrong. As election day neared, the gap between Biden and incumbent President Donald Trump grew narrower. However, Biden ultimately came out on top. This is the first time since 1992 that a sitting president didn’t secure a second term. Kamala Harris also made history as the first woman elected to the office of Vice President. The two promise to make meaningful changes once they take office on January 20. Many are skeptical that President Trump will attend, but President-elect Biden thinks he should.

President-elect Biden Discusses His Election Victory With Time

Biden and Harris took a moment to discuss their victory with the publication.

“This moment was one of those do-or-die moments. Had Trump won, I think we would have changed the nature of who we are as a country for a long time,” the President-elect told Time. He went on to discuss how he ultimately chose Kamala Harris as his running mate.

“There were a number of extremely qualified women that I had called and asked whether they would be willing to be considered. She is straight as an arrow. … She is tough,” he said. “But yet she has a heart that understands what it’s like to be on the other side of prejudice. She also was an immigrant’s daughter who was raised, in a strange way, like I was. We were taught that we could be anything. Don’t give up, just move, keep pushing. And I just found her to be someone who if, in fact, something happened to me, I knew they could take over. That’s Kamala.”

Kamala Harris Reflects On The Road That Led Her Here

Whether people agree with their ideas or not, no one can deny that this election will go down in history.

“It is one of my responsibilities. My mother had many sayings. She would say, ‘Kamala, you may be the first to do many things; make sure you’re not the last.’ Which is why [in my victory speech], I said, ‘I will be the first, but I will not be the last,'” Kamala Harris told Time. “And that’s about legacy. That’s about leaving the door more open than it was when you walked in.”

Time also recognized Dr. Anthony Fauci, the frontline healthcare workers, and racial-justice organizers as Guardians of the Year. Korean boyband BTS earned the title Entertainer of the Year. NBA star LeBron James took home Athlete of the Year.
