Donald Trump Blames ‘Cancel Culture’ After Cleveland Indians Drop Name

President Donald Trump slammed “cancel culture” after Cleveland’s baseball team changes its name. On Sunday, December 13, reports surfaced that the Cleveland Indians will drop its name after 105 years. The MLB franchise will announce its decision next week, according to The New York Times. Cleveland was already in the process of its transition when they dropped its mascot, Chief Wahoo.

New reports suggest they will keep their name for the 2021 season and change it by 2022. This comes after the former Washington Redskins dropped their controversial name. Native American groups opposed these racist names. As for Trump, he claims it’s a result of “cancel culture.”

Donald Trump slams “cancel culture” on Twitter

He reacted to the news on Twitter. Donald Trump shared his opposition against Cleveland’s name change and said it was a result of “cancel culture.”

“Oh no! What is going on? This is not good news, even for ‘Indians,'” Trump tweeted. “Cancel culture at work!”

However, it’s unclear what the team’s new name will be and if they will move beyond the transition with its licensing. Changing a sport’s franchise’s name is an expensive process since the new merchandise, stadium signs, and uniforms will need to be replaced. Other sport’s franchises, including the Atlanta Braves, Chicago Blackhawks, and the Kansas City Chiefs have already announced that a name change is not in their plans.

As per ESPN, the Cleveland team was supposed to announce the name change later this week. But that report leaked a few days earlier. Their decision comes after they dropped the controversial Chief Wahoo logo that Native American groups claimed was a racist depiction. It’s also unclear what slogan the team will select.

Cleveland baseball team gets major support

While Donald Trump is against the decision, others loved the decision. The Oneida Nation of New York showed the team major support. The Native American group was the first to lead the Change the Mascot Movement. They called on sports teams to remove their racist and insensitive mascots and nicknames. The group said that Cleveland’s decision was a result of decades of work from advocacy groups.

“Groups like the National Congress of American Indians passed resolutions for decades on this, social science has made clear these names are harmful and Cleveland got out in front of it and they’re leading, and rather than having this hanging over their heads, they’re clearing a new path,” the organization said in their statement to ESPN.

Trump has shared his thoughts about political correctness in the sports world. He vocally opposed NFL players who took a knee during the national anthem in protest of police brutality. He also criticized athletes who have spoken out against him. Trump publicly retracted his invite to the Golden State Warriors from visiting the White House following his criticism of Steph Curry.

Earlier this year, Trump reacted to the Washington Football Team announcing their new name. He criticized them for being weak to the backlash and blamed it on political correctness. He also called out the Cleveland baseball team, which removed its controversial mascot at that time.
