On Monday, Bill Gates and his wife Melissa shared a statement announcing they are getting a divorce. This sad news comes after the former couple celebrated 27 years of marriage. They first met at Microsoft and got married in 1994.
In a tweet, the co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft shared the news, writing:
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage. Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We continue to share a belief in the mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”
Melinda also shared the same message on her Twitter account. Both Bill and Melinda signed the tweet.
It’s unclear what the financial aspects of the divorce look like. There are few details available about the divorce so far. Currently, Bill owns 1.37% of Microsoft’s shares, totaling over $26 billion. Bill is worth $133 billion, while Melinda is worth $70 billion.
Bill and Melinda Gates turn off replies in divorce tweet
On Twitter, both Bill and Melinda have turned off the reply feature, so people cannot reply directly to them. As they stated in their initial message, they are asking for privacy during this time. By disabling the reply option on Twitter, they are able to block out some of the outside noise.
Still, a conversation has begun elsewhere on social media. It looks like many people are wishing Bill and Melinda the best moving forward. They seem to have a lot of support on social media, and everyone hopes they can work through this smoothly. Twitter users are talking about how difficult this decision must have been.
Of course, there are plenty of trolls weighing in on the divorce and sharing negative comments about Bill and Melinda.
