Prince Harry sat down for his first interview since leaving the British Royal family. He spoke candidly to James Corden about stepping back from his senior role. He felt that living in England “was destroying my mental health.” And then he shared the details of his new life in California with his wife Meghan Markle and their son, Archie.
The 36-year-old revealed some of the moments that they made the move to California. Last year, the couple announced that they were stepping down from their senior royal positions. Since then, they have made the big move to North America. But instead of the original plan to move to Canada, they moved to California.
Prince Harry “will never walk away” from the royal family
During his appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Thursday night, Prince Harry explained the reasons why they left their royal duties. This came after the couple announced that they would not return as working royals. Despite leaving their royal duties behind, Harry insists that he “will never walk away ” from his family or helping others in need.
“It was never walking away, it was stepping back rather than stepping down,” Harry told Corden. “It was a really difficult environment as I think a lot of people saw. We all know what the British press can be like. It was destroying my mental health.”
Harry felt that he had to do “what any husband and what any father would do.” He wanted to take his family and get out of England. But that doesn’t mean they “walked away” from his family or from their dedication to helping out. Harry called the situation “toxic.”
Royal fans may not know this. But Corden and Harry are longtime friends. He attended Meghan and Harry’s wedding in 2018. Harry told him that he will be the same person he was when he worked as a royal.
“Whatever decisions are made on that side I will never walk away,” Harry explained. “I’ll always be contributing. My life is public service so wherever I am in the world it’s going to be the same thing.”
What was Archie’s first word?
During the interview, Corden asked Prince Harry about his 21-month-old son, Archie. Harry’s eyes immediately lit up, according to People. He couldn’t wait to talk about his little one.
“My son is just over a year and a half. He is hysterical. He’s got the most amazing personality,” Harry revealed. “He’s already putting three or four words together, he’s already singing songs.”
Archie’s first word was “Crocodile.” While riding a tour bus of Los Angeles, Harry shared more details about his new life in Montecito with Archie and Meghan. Harry lovingly calls her “Meg” on FaceTime and says she makes the perfect breakfast with a surprise gift from Queen Elizabeth.
“My grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas and Meg said a waffle maker,” Harry explained. “She sent us a waffle maker for Archie. So breakfast now, Meg makes up a beautiful organic mix in the waffle maker.”
The waffle maker became a hit. Harry explained that his son “loves” the gift. Every morning, he asks for one. Check out the rest of their interview in the video below.
