On Sunday night, CNN aired a special hosted by Anderson Cooper and Kelly Ripa to honor pandemic heroes. Several celebrities joined them virtually during the night, including Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. She spoke in a pre-taped segment to honor those who went above and beyond to help mankind this year.
Meghan Markle Honored Compassionate People In Her Speech
“In a year that has been universally challenging for everyone, I’m inspired by the stories of compassion in our communities. Across the country, people have put their own needs aside to come together and support the collective well-being of those around them,” said the Duchess. She herself had a particularly challenging year. She and her husband Prince Harry were excitedly pregnant with their second child. But Meghan unfortunately miscarried over the summer.
Meghan Markle went on to recognize communities that stood up to take care of families that struggled to get by.
“These moments reminded so many that they’re cared for. Tonight, we are celebrating these quiet heroes, some of whom I know and others that we applaud from afar. These individuals stood up and made sure the most basic needs of our communities were met. They made sure those around them did not have to suffer in isolation. They nourished their neighbors in more ways than one,” the Duchess said. “And they showed us, all of us, that even in the darkest times, when we come together, we have the power to remind someone else that there is hope, and that we will be okay.”
Many other celebrities such as Millie Bobby Brown and Patton Oswalt also gave speeches during the night.

A Terrible Summer For The Family
Meghan described her own hardship in a personal essay she wrote for The New York Times.
“It was a July morning that began as ordinarily as any other day: Make breakfast. Feed the dogs. Take vitamins. Find that missing sock. Pick up the rogue crayon that rolled under the table,” she wrote. “Throw my hair in a ponytail before getting my son from his crib.”
But after she changed her son’s diaper, she felt a sharp pain. And that’s when she knew that something was very wrong. She lost the baby and cried with Prince Harry as she lay in her hospital bed.
Although it’s an incredibly painful memory, this experience is far too common for many families all over the world. Meghan Markle’s story serves as a reminder that it can happen to anyone, but they aren’t alone. Many other families felt validated by the Duchess’s essay.
2020 hasn’t been an easy year for anyone. But hopefully we can put this painful chapter behind us as we move toward 2021.
