What Role Will Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff Have?

Nikole Behrens

Kamala Harris is making history as the first woman to be elected Vice President. And her husband Doug Emhoff will be the very first Second Gentleman. Emhoff recently announced he will teach law courses at Georgetown University in the upcoming 2021 spring semester.

“I’ve long wanted to teach and serve the next generation of young lawyers,” said the future Second Gentleman. “I couldn’t be more excited to join the Georgetown community.”

“I am delighted that Douglas Emhoff will be joining our faculty,” the Georgetown Law Dean said. “Doug is one of the nation’s leading intellectual property and business litigators, and he has a strong commitment to social justice. I know our students will greatly benefit from his experience and insight, and I am eagerly looking forward to his arrival.”

Emhoff isn’t the only one passionate about education. Dr. Jill Biden plans to teach while she simultaneously serves as First Lady of the United States.

Doug Emhoff Has A Long, Rich History In The Legal Field

Doug Emhoff is certainly no stranger to the law. His career spans nearly 30 years. During that time, he saw many media, entertainment, and intellectual property cases. Since Kamala Harris joined the Democratic ticket, he’s taken a leave of absence from his firm. He plans to completely leave the firm before Biden and Harris take office on January 20.

However, Emhoff still has some Second Gentleman matters to do.  During the campaign season, he previously said he would like to focus on justice issues. On Thanksgiving, he and Harris stopped at a food kitchen in Washington D.C. During that visit, Emhoff said he wants to tackle food insecurity too.

The country will likely learn more about his plans as we near January 20. But for the time being, he seems very passionate about working towards a better world for all Americans.

Will The Term “Second Gentleman” Stick?

In a recent CNN interview with Jake Tapper, Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff sat down to discuss serious issues plaguing the United States today. However, it wasn’t all serious.

At one point, the Vice President-elect joked that she hoped friends would call Emhoff the “Second Dude.

Tapper asked if Harris planned to call Emhoff the “Second Gentleman.” She joked that she wouldn’t and that she would call him “honey” instead.

But no matter what she decides to call him, this is a very exciting first for the country. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris says that she has no doubt there will be more women Vice Presidents after her. That means there will likely be many more Second Gentlemen too. Only time tell if the title sticks, but it seems to be work just fine so far.
