2024 is shaping up to be an interesting year. For one, current U.S. President Donald Trump is gearing up for another election bid in 4 years.

In global news, the 2024 Paris Olympic games are adding new sporting events to the program. It’s something that’s been in the works for several years, but only officially confirmed this month.

Breakdancing Becomes Olympic Medal Sport

Breakdancing was a huge fad in the 1980’s. While it’s never gone out of style, it is less visible these days. But that will likely change leading up to, and after, the 2024 Olympics.

On Monday, December 7, the International Olympic Committee voted to officially allow breakdancing into the medal competition. This comes as the committee looks to add equality and diversity to the Olympics.

The urban dance style will be known by its original name from the 1970’s, “Breaking,” ESPN reports. And it’s not the only new sport fans can enjoy watching in the 2024 Olympics.

Other Sports Events Joining the 2024 Games

The Olympic International Committee (OIC) made several changes to the competition. In addition to adding new sports, they reduced the number of medal ceremonies, including removing four weightlifting events. Additionally, only 10,500 athletes will compete, which is a few hundred less than the upcoming games in Tokyo.

In fact, the Committee is considering removing weightlifting events from the program completely. This comes after multiple doping scandals.

Joining breakdancing as new medal events are skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing.

The surfing portion of the 2024 Olympics will take place in Tahiti, some 9,000 miles away. The definition of ‘sport climbing’ is “scaling steep ascents.” Basically, extreme rock climbing.

The Youth Olympics have been testing the idea of adding breakdancing to the larger games. Check out this video of some of the earlier breakdancing trials.

2020 Olympic Games Postponed

As most people know, the Olympic games SHOULD have been held in 2020. Like most things, the coronavirus pandemic made that impossible. The 2020 Tokyo Games have been postponed until next year. The Tokyo Olympics will start on Friday, July 23, 2021, and run until August 8, 2021.

The OIC also passed COVID-related guidelines for the Tokyo games. For one, athletes will not be allowed to stay in the Olympic Village for the entire two weeks. Instead, they must leave within two days after their medal competition ends.

In 2028, the Olympics will return to the United States. Los Angeles got the winning bid to host the summer 2028 Olympics.
