How To Get Out Of Doing Jury Duty In The Courtroom

Jury duty is something no one ever wants to do. It is a court order, and you have to appear to be on the jury. However, this is something most people want to get out of. They sit and try to find reasons they can not do it, and will try their hardest to get out of it. However, most people do not know what qualifies them to get out of jury duty. So, keep reading to find out how.

There are requirements to be on jury duty in the courtroom.

  • be a United States citizen
  • be at least 18 years old
  • have resided primarily in the judicial district for at least one year at the time of completion of the qualification questionnaire
  • be able to read, write, understand, and speak the English language
  • No mental illness that can’t be accommodated
  • not be subject to felony charges punishable by imprisonment for more than one year
  • do not have a felony on your record

However, here are some ways you can get out of it.

  • if you are in the military on active service you can get out of jury duty.
  • you cannot be a police officer or an officer of the law.
  • if you are over 70 and have been apart of a federal jury in the last two years
  • persons who serve as volunteer firefighters or members of a rescue squad or ambulance crew
  • conflict of interest

However, if you use excuses such as:

  • racist
  • defendant looks guilty
  • never side with police
  • always side with police

Or anything like those, you can get charged with contempt and some serious trouble for lying to try and get out of it. So, you have to have a legitimate reason to get out of jury duty. This does not happen often. However, if it does, there is a possibility you can be exempt.
