It’s been a rollercoaster year for Avatar: The Last Airbender fans. Last year, fans were overjoyed to learn the hit Nickelodeon show and its sequel, The Legend of Korra, were headed for Netflix. Now, show creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino recently confirmed their plans for Avatar Studios and a brand new film based on the series.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been 19 years since we created Avatar: The Last Airbender,” they said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “But even after all that time, there are still many stories and time periods in Aang’s world that we are eager to bring to life. We are fortunate to have an ever-growing community of passionate fans that enjoys exploring the Avatarverse as much as we do.”
The new Avatar: The Last Airbender project brings hope to many fans
This is especially exciting news after the heartbreak fans received last August.
Konietzko and DiMartino at one point planned to partner with Netflix to create a brand new live-action Avatar series. After the 2010 live-action abomination, fans had high hopes for the Netflix project.
However, Konietzko and DiMartino announced they parted ways with the Netflix project in August. DiMartino updated fans on his blog.
“Many of you have been asking me for updates about the Avatar live-action Netflix series. I can finally tell you that I am no longer involved with the project. In June of this year, after two years of development work, Bryan Konietzko and I made the difficult decision to leave the production,” DiMartino wrote. He alluded that he and Konietzko departed the project based on creative differences with Netflix.
Fans are so excited to have Konietzko and DiMartino on board with this latest project.
So what’s happening with the Netflix project?
The Netflix project is still reportedly moving ahead, but the platform is definitely making some bizarre changes. Katara will reportedly be older than her brother Sokka in this project, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But some fans have theories on why this could be. The theories are far from the story DiMartino and Konietzko hoped to tell.
However, fans firmly believe whatever is happening with the Netflix project can’t be worse than the M. Night Shyamalan version from 2010. In case you didn’t know, it received eight nominations at the Golden Raspberry Awards. It won four of them, including “Worst Picture of the Year.” This live-action version has a 5% on Rotten Tomatoes while the original series has a 97%. Those numbers alone are pretty telling what happens to Avatar projects when Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino aren’t involved.
