Vice President-elect Kamala Harris had her first joint interview with President-elect Joe Biden since they won the 2020 election. On Saturday, November 7, several major outlets, including the Associated Press, announced Biden’s win. Since then, the two have been working on repairing America and solving the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden even announced his cabinet.
During their interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, the pair discussed everything from key political issues to COVID-19 vaccines. They also answered burning questions as to what they plan to do once they take office. Harris even revealed what she will call her husband.
What does she plan to call Doug Emhoff?
Most of the interview was on serious issues. But there were plenty of light-hearted moments, including Kamala Harris joking that her friends will have to call her husband, Doug Emhoff, “the second dude.” Harris is set to make history as America’s first-ever female Vice President. When she’s sworn into office on January 20, Emhoff will take on the role of “second gentleman,” which is also a first. Harris admits that she won’t use that term herself.
Tapper asked Harris if she will refer to Emhoff as “the second gentleman.” She laughed and said; “No, I’ll call him honey.” During another funny moment, Biden talked about the fracture he suffered in his foot while walking his dog, Major, last month.
“The little pup dropped the ball in front of me for me to grab the ball … and I grabbed the ball like this, and he ran, and I was joking running after him to grab his tail,” Biden said. “And what happened was that he slid on a throw rug, and I tripped on the rug he slid on. That’s what happened. Not a very exciting story.”
Harris and Biden also got serious during the interview. The duo discussed a potential COVID-19 vaccine. They revealed whether they will get the vaccination once it becomes available.
“Of course I would,” Harris answered. “We also want to make sure that the American people know that we are committed. The President-elect and I talked about this all the time, but the people who need it most are going to be a priority.”
As for Biden, he will “be happy” to follow Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton in getting a vaccine available to the public. He wants to prove it’s safe to do so, but when “Dr. Fauci says we have a vaccine that is safe.” Biden will use that moment to inform Americans it’s safe to get vaccinated.
Kamala Harris previously said she “won’t be the last” female VP
In November, Kamala Harris made history as the first-ever female Vice President. She recognized the battle that women have faced for the right to vote and to work in American politics. In her speech on Saturday night, November 7 in Wilmington, Delaware, she said that “every little girl watching” knows they have a chance to.
“While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” Harris said. “Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.”
Harris made history as the first woman, the first Black person, and the first South Asian elected vice president. She was also the fourth woman to appear on a major political party’s presidential ticket. This came after Democratic vice presidential nominee Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, Republican No. 2 Sarah Palin in 2008, and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016. Harris is the first to win.
