The annual lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center usually kicks off the holidays. But 2020 isn’t done with us yet! Not only will the lighting ceremony be different, the tree itself leaves a lot to be desired. Grinches took to Twitter to share photos with commentary slamming the sad-looking tree.
2020 Rockefeller Christmas Tree Looks Like it’s Fit for Charlie Brown
A Charlie Brown Christmas is a staple of the holiday season. Every year, families gather around the TV and watch Charlie Brown and friends learn the true meaning of Christmas. In the animated special, Charlie Brown’s small, meager tree is mocked by his friends. Even Charlie Brown becomes dejected when the tiny tree buckles under the weight of an ornament.
That’s how Twitter users felt seeing videos and photos of the 2020 Christmas tree going up in Rockefeller Center in NYC. In one video, the tree seems to collapse against buildings as the crane tries to hold it upright.
Could the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree look any worse?

While the tree was eventually in place, social media noticed that it was looking a little bare. One Twitter user joked that it looked like the tree “tried to cut its own hair.”

Another Twitter user invoked Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree in comparison to the 2020 Rockefeller tree.

Where Does the Rockefeller Christmas Tree Come From?
Every year, a Christmas tree is donated to the Rockefeller Center for the annual tree-lighting and photo op spot. This year, the tree originates from Daddy Al’s General Store from upstate New York. Syracuse.com notes that the tree from Oneonta, N.Y, is a “75-foot Norway spruce.”
Say hello to the 2020 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree! Hailing from Oneonta, NY, this Norway Spruce will arrive at Rockefeller Center this Saturday, November 14 to kick off the holiday season.

How tall do you think this year’s tree is? pic.twitter.com/UMmxiY3toV
While the Christmas tree is up now, it won’t be lit until December 2.
Will the Public Be Allowed to Attend Tree Lighting?
The tree-lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center usually draws a HUGE crowd. But due to the coronavirus pandemic, the tradition will be a little different this year. While the tree-lighting ceremony will go on, the public will NOT be allowed to attend. Instead, everyone will have to watch it on NBC.
Once the tree is light, it is a huge tourist attraction in NYC. While the city has yet to announce how it will work, crowds around the tree will not be restricted this year.
One Twitter user did note that like Charlie Brown’s tree, the Rockefeller Center tree will look better once branches and decorations are added.
Coincidentally, A Charlie Brown Christmas will also look different this year. It won’t air on CBS or any other traditional network. Rather, fans can watch it for free on AppleTV+ from December 11 to 13.
What do you think about the 2020 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree? Will you be watching the tree-lighting ceremony on TV this year? Or are you more a Hallmark movie type?
Correction: After public backlash, A Charlie Brown Christmas will now air on PBS on December 13th, along with streaming on AppleTV+.
