When a cop starts to follow behind, this can be one of the most nerve-wrecking moments. Will they just follow or actually pull you over? If they do pull you to the side of the road, there are a handful of things that should never be said. So, what are they? Keep reading for more details.

What Not To Say When Pulled Over By The Cops

Getting pulled over is less than desirable. Regardless of the reasoning, seeing cops in your rearview mirror can be incredibly intimidating. No one knows how they will react if and when this does happen, but the first step is to be kind and follow the rules. Some give attitude because they are defiant and really feel they have done nothing wrong. The more peaceful the exchange, the better the outcome. Aside from a kind demeanor, never say that there is a weapon in the car. This can cause more drama than necessary, so just stay relaxed and listen to what they are asking.

The next thing that one should never do if and when they are pulled over is tell the cop to search the car. An officer cannot do a vehicle search without the driver’s authorization. If you tell them they can, it can seem incriminating on your part. Plus, they may find items you had long forgotten about and cause even more trouble than initially believed. Going back to the beginning, do not bother going back and forth with an officer. Let them tell you why they pulled you over, and give them what they request.

License and registration will likely be the first things they want to see. Finally, never say that your license is not on your person or has been suspended/restricted. Or that you do not even have one to begin with. They will always ask for these first, and if you do not have anything on you, say that it is elsewhere. The cops will then look you up in the system and discover where the license, if there is one, actually is.

Relax & Breathe

Yes, getting pulled over can cause anxiety, but just try to relax and breathe. A cop will likely be willing to work with you if you are polite and do not have an attitude. They want to keep it short, simple, and sweet, get you on your way to safety. If you follow these rules, things can be so much better in the long run.
