In Monaco, the royals, masked during this period of Covid, just celebrated Saint Dévote Day on Friday. Saint Dévote is the Grimaldi family patron saint. That means, every year, on January 27, this is a national holiday. They honor their patron saint in this annual celebration where they participate in the symbolic burning of a sailboat.
However, Princess Charlene did not participate in the royal festivities and was nowhere to be seen.
Therefore, the Monaco Palace has issued an update on Charlene’s health. What did they have to say?
Monaco Palace Issues Health Update On Princess Charlene
Although Princess Charlene is not part of the Saint Dévote Day festivities, the Monaco Palace has made sure to not allow her to be forgotten. According to People, they shared a statement, which they translated from the original French.
First, they announced that the “convalescence of H.S.H. Princess Charlene is currently continuing in a satisfying and very encouraging way.”
However, they warned that the South African-born Princess is still in recovery. Alarmingly, this includes dental treatment that “will still take several weeks.” Therefore, she”unfortunately will not be able to attend the festivities of the Sainte Dévote this year.”
“With her husband H.S.H. Prince Albert II, she shares her heart with all Monegasques and residents on the occasion of these celebrations. As soon as her health will allow, it will be with joy that the Princess once again share moments of conviviality with them.
During this period, the Royal Couple requests that their private life and that of their children continue to be respected.”
When Did Monaco Royal Become Ill?
The saga of Princess Charlene’s illness began nearly a year ago. Around May 2021, Princess Charlene headed to her native South Africa for her charities. Unbeknownst to her, she had a mild infection that dramatically worsened. She found herself grounded and unable to fly back to Monaco, her husband, Prince Albert, and twin children, Prince Jacques, and Princess Gabriella.
Although the Monaco Palace has not shared full details of her illness, it is related to her ears/nose/throat. There have been reports that she had numerous surgeries. Shockingly, she reportedly has been unable to eat food. She can only drink liquids.
Her family was able to fly down and reunite with her in South Africa. However, it was not until another surgery that she could return home in November. At that time, Princess Charlene chose to seek treatment and a lot of rest.
At the time, Albert explained, “She already knew the best thing to do was to go and have a rest and have a real medically framed treatment.”
Where Is Princess Charlene Now?
Princess Charlene is currently receiving treatment outside of Monaco. This is in an undisclosed location. However, she has had some family visitors including her husband, Prince Albert, the only son of former American actress Grace Kelly.
