Meghan Markle revealed her father Thomas Markle’s “betrayal” with the U.K. tabloids. He kept a close relationship with the British press. It was the first time that Duchess of Sussex spoke out about her father and half-sister in the groundbreaking interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Unfortunately, two hours was not enough. The couple had an over three-hour long conversation with Oprah Winfrey. On Monday, March 8, the former daytime host released unaired clips from the interview on CBS’ This Morning. During the interview, Meghan opened up about her relationship with her estranged father, who went behind her back and spoke to the press.
Meghan Markle says Thomas Markle broke her trust
“There was such an obsession about anything in my world, including tracking down my parents. And I did everything I could to protect both of them in that media frenzy,” Meghan Markle told Oprah. “But for over a year, the U.K. tabloids were trying to find my dad, offering people so much money to try to find his address.”
Harry’s wife revealed that the press went as far as to live next door to her father. They eventually forged a relationship with him. From there, they sent him gifts and entered his world. Meghan says she was “betrayed” by her father, who continues to speak to the tabloids to this day. She wasn’t sure if she felt comfortable “even talking about that” since she’s a deeply private person.
According to Meghan, the tabloids don’t report news, “they create news.” She told Oprah that he “basically lied” to her about going behind her back. Meghan recalls telling her father that they would have helped him if he came forward with the truth. Unlike Thomas, her mother, Doria Ragland, has not spoken to the press.
Thomas Markle responds to the sit-down interview
On Tuesday, March 9, Thomas Markle revealed on a British morning show that he apologized to Meghan Markle for lying about his relationship with the press “at least a hundred times.” He also claimed that the couple has ignored his calls. Thomas finds nothing wrong with speaking to the press. He explained why he shares stories with the British tabloids.
“Bottom line is I’ve never heard back from Meghan or Harry in any way shape or form,” Thomas revealed on Good Morning Britain. “When they say I’m taking advantage of the press, basically what I do, I do a story for the press. If I don’t hear from them in 30 days, then I do another story for the press.”
Thomas chalks it up to making mistakes. Then, he fired back at Harry by saying that he’s “never played naked pool” and “never dressed up like Hitler.” Thomas also said he hasn’t spoken to his daughter in about four years. The last time he heard from the couple was before their wedding.
At the time, Thomas was in the hospital for a heart attack. He told them that he wouldn’t be able to attend the ceremony. Meghan’s father also staged photos of himself in the press.
“Harry said to me at that point, ‘If you had listened to me, this wouldn’t have happened to you,'” Thomas explained. “And me laying in a hospital bed after I’ve had a procedure, and getting a stent put here and a stent put there, felt like that was kind of snotty, so I hung up on him.”
Thomas currently lives 70 miles away from the couple. However, he would love to visit his grandson Archie. He extended a visit to see the family via the British media. Check back with Entertainment Chronicle for more news about Meghan Markle.
