On January 20th, Joe Biden will be inaugurated as the next President of the United States. But for pet lovers, the main event will happen a few days earlier with the “Indoguration” of the Biden family’s rescue pup, Major.

Many dog lovers are rejoicing that dogs will be back in the White House when Biden begins his first term as President later this month.

Dogs Back in the White House

For the last four years, the White House has been a pet-free environment. During Obama’s eight-years in office, he had two dogs – Bo and Sunny. The Portuguese Water Dogs are hypoallergenic. Bo Obama joined the family in 2009. Sunny came along a few years later, in 2013.

When Biden takes office later this month, not one – but TWO dogs – will share the title of First Dog(s.) Champ was the first to join the Biden family after the 2008 election win. Now 12, Champ is a German Shepherd.

In 2018, the family added another German Shepherd to the family. But this time, they chose to adopt from the Delaware Humane Association (DHA.) Major will be the first rescue dog to ever live in the White House.

The Bidens will also soon add a cat to the family.

Major Biden’s ‘Indoguration’

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Biden’s team has been planning a scaled back inauguration. After the attack on the Capitol on January 6, security for the January 20th inauguration has increased tenfold.

Reportedly, the event will not feature a crowd, but Biden will appear in person for the swearing-in. Former Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton will all be in attendance. The outgoing President Trump will not be attending. Due to his age, Carter won’t attend.

Officials encourage people to watch the inauguration virtually. The Delaware Humane Association is planning an earlier event on January 17th that will honor Major. The “Indoguration” will celebrate the historical first of having a rescue First Dog of the United States.

Additionally, the event serves as a fundraiser for the DHA. Along with the DHA, Pumpkin Pet Insurance is sponsoring he “Indoguration.” A $10 donation will get you into the virtual event.

People magazine reports that Today Show’s Jill Martin will emcee the event. She will be joined by Olympic medalist Lindsey Vonn’s three dogs.

Participants are encouraged to include their own pets in the virtual Zoom session. More information can be found at the DHA website.

It’s not clear yet if Champ will also be part of the “Indoguration.”

President-Elect Biden’s inauguration will air on television and social media on January 20th, starting around 11 a.m.
