Play that funky music, white boy!
While Jennifer Lopez was headlining New Year’s Eve in Times Square for ABC’s Rockin’ New Year, Vanilla Ice was the main event down in Florida. He kept partygoers on their feet at Donald Trump’s annual Mar-A-Lago New Year’s Eve party. However, the President skipped out on the event to head back to D.C. early. The party was roundly slammed on social media for not following CDC recommendations against large gatherings.
Vanilla Ice, Beach Boys’ Mike Love, Perform At Mar-A-Lago Party
Since his 90s heyday, Vanilla Ice has become infamous for bad behavior. He’s had several run-ins with the law, most recently in 2015 when he was booked for burglary and theft. He was convicted of stealing furniture and other items from a vacant home, accepting a plea deal that spared him jail time.
Earlier this year, he was forced to cancel a July 4th concert in Austin, Texas, after major public backlash. The country was in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic at the time, a pandemic that is still raging.
At the time of the Independence Day concert, restaurants and bars in Texas were shut down. However, restrictions have eased considerably in Florida, where the Mar-A-Lago New Year’s Eve party was held.
For whatever reason – perhaps Kid Rock was booked – Vanilla Ice was chosen to headline the New Year’s Eve event. ETCanada reports that Beach Boys singer Mike Love and 80s pop band Berlin (“Take My Breath Away”) were also performers at the party.
But it was Vanilla Ice that earned the most ire from Twitter users.
Twitter Trolls Superspreader Event
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were supposed to be at the Mar-A-Lago party. However, at the last minute, Trump decided to return to Washington ahead of President-elect Biden’s inauguration. Even without the POTUS, the party was a rager.
A video circulated on Twitter of Vanilla Ice performing one of his songs. Twitter users couldn’t get over the irony of the song’s lyrics at the end of the clip. “Play that funky music ‘til you die.” Ice rapped at a party in the middle of a pandemic. Not only did partygoers pack in tight to the stage, no one was wearing masks.

Don Jr. Fanboys Over Ice Ice Baby Rapper
Vanilla Ice had at least one fan in the audience – President Trump’s son, Don Jr. He attended the party with his girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle. He took to his Instagram to fanboy over Vanilla Ice’s mid-song shoutout.
