Former Presidential candidate Andrew Yang is considering his options for other political office opportunities. This includes the possibility of running for Mayor of the biggest city in the country.

Andrew Yang Considering Running for Mayor of NYC

Many Democrats wanted to be President in 2020. At one point, there were almost 30 candidates for the primary. By the time the primaries rolled around, there was only one person still standing – eventual President-elect Joe Biden. But there were 10 serious considerations, including Biden’s future running-mate, Kamala Harris, and tech giant Andrew Yang.

Yang dropped out of the race in February of 2020. Like the other top candidates, he gave Biden his endorsement.

Andrew Yang has never held political office before. He made his career as a tech entrepreneur. Despite his lack of experience, he had some great ideas and a fair amount of supporters.

It seems that a run for President only whet his appetite for public service. People magazine reports that Andrew Yang filed the official paperwork to run for Mayor of New York City. He said that he “wants to do the most good” where he can. Furthermore, he noted that his children go to school in NYC.

There are reportedly 40 other candidates running for Mayor in the 2021 race.

Mayor Bill de Blasio Also Failed Candidate for Presidency

Bill de Blasio has been the Mayor of New York City since 2013. He has served two terms, but can’t run for a third term due to term limits. His second term ends in 2021.

In May of 2019, de Blasio announced that he was throwing his hat into the 2020 Presidential election. However, his campaign never gained much traction and he bowed out just four months later. His name never appeared on the primary ballot.

As the current Mayor of New York, de Blasio has taken the brunt of criticism for the NYPD’s response to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Yang’s Presidential Platform Included Universal Basic Income Payments

Critics of Yang’s inexperience in public policy derided his campaign promise of monthly income for all Americans. His Universal Basic Income program would have provided $1,000 per month to adults in the United States.

Since Yang hasn’t officially declared his candidacy, his platform is unknown at this time. He could run on  the Universal Income again. However, as we saw during the Presidential campaign – vocal support doesn’t always turn into votes at the ballot.

It remains to be seen if Yang really does run for Mayor of New York. Let us know in the comments down below your thoughts on the possibility.

Governor Cuomo plans to run for re-election in 2022, but perhaps Yang could challenge him for the job.
