Kirk Cameron Claims Christmas Caroling Is Needed During Pandemic

Former child star Kirk Cameron got heat for hosting a large gather amid COVID-19 restrictions. He claims the Christmas caroling event was a “peaceful protest” to oppose California’s statewide pandemic stay-at-home order. The 50-year-old actor organized the event on Sunday, December 13. This is the second event he hosted this month.

The staunch Christian feels that Christmas caroling should continue amid the pandemic. However, he had nearly 500 people at this event. Most of the attendees were maskless as they belted out Christmas carols outside a Thousand Oaks parking lot. Despite spreading holiday cheer, the protestors were against coronavirus guidelines.

Kirk Cameron draws criticism for Christmas singalong

The Growing Pains alum is known for his Christian movies such as Mercy Rule. He wants to spread some holiday cheer this year. But he’s doing it in a unique and unusual manner. It hasn’t gone over well with his followers. Kirk Cameron got backlash for organizing and attending the large event. He even shared videos on Instagram.

“God Bless America. Joy over fear!” Cameron wrote in one post.

Critics flocked to post. They noted that most of the carolers were going to spread more than just Christmas cheer.

  • “This is one of the most irresponsible things I’ve seen lately.”
  • “To him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin…”
  • “No social distancing and only a couple of people wearing masks? This is so disrespectful and disappointing.”
  • “As a fellow member of your community, this is a slap in the face to all those nurses picketing our hospital right now because they’re exhausted.”
  • “So does love thy neighbors mean you love them so much you’re gonna give them covid?”

Cameron didn’t respond to the backlash. Instead, he explained why he wanted to hold the event.

“It’s part town hall meeting, part worship service,” Cameron said in another Instagram video promoting the event. “If you love God, if you love Christmas and you love liberty, you’re not going to want to miss this.”

The event promotes more than just Christmas music

Per The Los Angeles Times, Sunday’s event followed a previous event Kirk Cameron held. Over 500 people attended as part of a nationwide movement called “Sing It Louder USA.” The group continues to protest limitations such as social distancing and restaurant closures. According to the movement’s website, over 100 gatherings have taken place in 30 states.

Cameron has left Hollywood to become an evangelic Christian. He’s active with a ministry based in the Los Angeles area. Since then, he’s partnered with the Sing It Louder USA and has been leading the protests against California Gov. Gavin Newsom. The first event had “over 500 people” singing not Christmas songs but protesting the new rules.

Despite the backlash, some supported Cameron’s movement. One follower on Instagram told him to “Keep up the great work!”
