Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden will bring their furry friends with them to the White House. Donald Trump became the first president in U.S. history to not have a pet at the White House. But animals will be back soon. President-elect Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, confirmed in a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning that they are planning to get a cat.
The couple is already the proud owners of two German shepherds, Champ and Major. They want to expand their furry family before they make their move to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C.
Animals to return to the White House
On Friday, November 27, the CBS Sunday Morning show tweeted that Joe Biden and his wife will bring their German shepherds to the White House. The beloved dogs will soon be joined by a cat. It’s unclear what kind of cat the Bidens plan to adopt. Back in September, the former second lady teased that their family would include a cat. But they plan to adopt after the former vice president is inaugurated in January.
Well, I’d love to get a cat. I love having animals around the house,” she said in an interview with Fox 5’s Angie Goff.
The last cat that lived in the White House was a black cat named India, who belonged to George W. Bush’s family. Bill Clinton and his family had their famous cat, Socks. Most presidents owned dogs. As for Trump, he doesn’t have any furry friends.
And now some breaking news on #SundayMorning…

Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden are bringing their fur babies with them
For the first time in four years, dogs are back at the White House, thanks to the Bidens. They own two beautiful German shepherds. They adopted Major from the Delaware Humane Association in November 2018. A decade prior, they welcomed Champ into their home. He will become the first shelter dog to live at the White House, as per NBC News.
Champ and Major are always present on the Bidens’ social media accounts. They also made special appearances leading up to the 2020 presidential election. Throughout his campaign, Biden said that he wanted to “bring dogs back to the White House.” Champ and Major will be the first dogs at the White since the Obama family’s Portuguese water dogs, Bo and Sunny.
Does Donald Trump hate dogs?
Some admit it’s strange to see a President without a pooch. Thankfully, Joe Biden will bring them back. As for Trump, he’s never had an affinity for dogs. Vanity Fair (as per GQ Magazine) revealed Trump’s thoughts on the beloved family pet.
“To the president, dogs are capable of many things, none of which are particularly dog-like,” a source told the magazine. “Begging for money, for example. Getting dumped. Feeling ungrateful… Trump never compared anything to a dog that draws on how that animal famously is. It’s never ‘He’s loyal like a dog’ … The creatures have never done much good in the Trumpian universe.”
In Raising Trump, ex-wife Ivanka revealed that Trump was “not a dog fan.” He didn’t like her poodle, Chappy, who would “bark at him territorially.” It also sounds like dogs don’t like Trump back. Of course, this makes some people wonder if 45 is really a cat person.
