It’s that time again. The time when media outlets make lists of the best books/movies/shows of 2020. And Time magazine announces Person of the Year 2020. The magazine recently gave readers a chance to vote for one of the year’s 80 nominees. Some of the entries may surprise you.
New York Governor Cuomo, Michigan Governor Whitmer Contenders for Time Honor
Andrew Cuomo has been the Governor of New York State since 2011. But it wasn’t until 2020 that he reached a national level of significance. Partly due to his feud with President Trump and partly due to his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
New York City was hit the fastest and the hardest in the U.S. by the worldwide pandemic. As Governor, Cuomo quickly sprung into action, invoking a state-wide mask mandate and shuttering non-essential businesses. However, he also had mistakes, most notably the directive requiring nursing homes to accept COVID patients, which resulted in many unnecessary deaths.
Throughout 2020, Cuomo and President Trump have publicly feuded, mostly over Trump’s response to the growing pandemic. Surprisingly, Governor Cuomo recently took up in Trump’s defense over disrespectful reporters.
Michigan’s Governor Whitmer is also getting praise for her swift response to the coronavirus. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with her policies. Governor Whitmer was recently the target of a bizarre kidnapping plot.
Dr. Fauci Up For Time Person of the Year 2020
Dr. Fauci was rumored to be joining ABC’s dance competition Dancing With The Stars. While that never happened, he did nab a nomination for Time’s Person of the Year. The esteemed immunologist has been a leader in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. While the Trump administration has tried to distance itself from Dr. Fauci, many people around the country continue to listen and trust his advice about ending the pandemic.
President Trump, VP Pence, President-Elect Biden, VP-Elect Harris Make the List
Both the current administration and the future administration got nods from Time for Person of the Year. President Trump and Vice President Pence are among the nominees for 2020. As readers know, Trump previously won in 2016.
Additionally, President-elect Biden and his running mate, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, earned nominations. All four earned their own separate nominations.
Aside from the top leaders, other people in politics are up for Person of the Year 2020. That includes Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and new Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett. As well as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Other Notable Nominees
The nominees aren’t all political. There are some musical acts, sport figures and human rights organizations nominated. Syracuse.com notes that Ariana Grande, boy band sensation BTS and former Presidential nominee Kanye West are under consideration for Person of the Year.
The Black Lives Matter movement is another nominee.

The Person of the Year is not meant to be the most popular or well-liked. After all, Adolf Hilter was named Time’s Person of the Year in 1938. Rather, it’s the “most influential” person, group or organization.
Who gets your vote as Person of the Year? Let us know in the comments below. Time will announce the winner on December 10.
