Is Joe Biden’s Dog Major Stealing All Of Champ’s Thunder?

The Bidens are a hot topic this week. Particularly our next DOTUS (Dogs of the United States,) Champ and Major. You’ve likely read all about Major. He will be, after all, the first shelter dog to live at the White House. But what about his older dog sibling, Champ?

Biden Win Puts Dogs Back in the White House

Whether you agree with President Trump’s policies or not, it’s clear that he is not a dog person. Or any pet person. To many, his disinterest in dogs and frequent use of “like a dog” as a put down speaks to his character. So, Joe Biden’s win was celebrated on many different levels, including bringing DOTUS back into The People’s House.

President Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama, got a puppy during his time at the White House. Bo Obama, a Portuguese Water Dog, later got a little doggy sister in Sunni Obama.

Bo Obama is arguably the most popular First Pet of all-time, thought Bill Clinton’s cat Socks is a close runner-up. But First Pets aren’t a new thing in the White House. And while it may also seem that First Pets are well-behaved compared to regular pets, a dog once got banned from the White House!

In the 1950s, President Eisenhower had a Weimaraner named Heidi as a pet. After ruining an expensive rug, she was sent to the farm. Literally. She lived out the rest of her life at Eisenhower’s farm in Pennsylvania.

In the days following Biden winning the election – which Trump kind of, maybe conceded – the focus turned to his dogs.

All About Champ

Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden have two German Shepherd dogs. Major is a two-year-old rescue and Champ is 12. Major being the first rescue dog in the White House got a lot of attention this week. So much that not much was reported about Champ.

It turns out that the Bidens got Champ shortly after the 2008 election win. The BBC reports that Champ was named by Biden’s grandchildren. The name comes from Joe Biden’s father telling him, “Any time you get knocked down, champ, get up!”

Major was adopted from the Delaware Humane Association in 2018.

Donald Trump’s presidency broke a streak of over 100 years of First Pets. But several of the Democratic nominees for the 2020 election also have dogs. Elizabeth Warren’s dog, Bailey, often accompanied her on the campaign trail. If they opted in, supporters could even get on a text chain with messages from Bailey.

Pete Buttigieg actually has two dogs – a puggle named Buddy and a beagle/lab mix named Truman. The Biden DOTUS fan account @first_dogs_usa paid tribute to some of the dogs of Biden’s opponents.
