Nancy Crampton Brophy wrote an essay on the concept of murdering your spouse. She claimed it was easier to do so than to actually file for divorce. It seemed to be more satirical than serious. That is until she was the one with blood on her hands.
Nancy Crampton Brophy, Just A Writer?
In 2011, Nancy wrote an essay called “How To Murder Your Husband.” According to People, it was not written in the first person but rather as someone else. She joked: “Divorce is expensive, and do you really want to split your possessions?” There were apparently a lot of questions within the essay that ended with this: “it is easier to wish people dead than to actually kill them.” Seven years later, she was found guilty of killing her own husband. Daniel Brophy, 63 was a teacher at the Oregon Culinary Institute. On the morning of his death, he was filling ice and water buckets.
Suddenly, he was shot in the back and chest left to be discovered by his students. During the trial, prosecutors alleged that Nancy was caught driving around the school by security cameras. This was less than an hour prior to him being killed. Of course, she claimed this was a “coincidence.” Despite having written about killing a husband in an essay, that was not allowed to be used in court. It was deemed “inadmissible” evidence. So, what would bring Nancy to end her husband’s life? Read on to find out the motive.
Take Him To The Bank…Maybe
Apparently, art imitated life as Nancy Crampton Brophy murdered her husband to collect on his life insurance policy. It was estimated to be worth 1.5 million dollars. Though it was argued she never monetarily benefitted from his death, she also did some fishy things post-murder. Per The Washington Post, Nancy asked the police to write a letter saying she was not a suspect but that was denied. This occurred just four days after he was killed. The reason for this letter was so that she could collect on his policies. She proceeded to make claims on ten policies.
As for the gun he was killed with, Brophy had purchased a ghost gun which is a homemade weapon that cannot be traced. Unfortunately for Nancy, she could not figure out how to build it. She ended up buying a 9mm Glock and switched its slide and barrel so it would not match in the end. Nancy never told the police she had any weapons when questioned not even the ghost gun she could not build. She was sentenced to life in prison this week.
“I don’t want to worry about blood and brains splattered on my walls. And really, I’m not good at remembering lies. But the thing I know about murder is that every one of us have it in him/her when pushed far enough.”
