AEW Revolution 2021: Ratings and Ranking Every Match

The first AEW PPV of the year is finally here. AEW Revolution has been built up well since the start of the year and it’s expected to be memorable. The main event is set between Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley in an Exploding Barbed Wire Death Match. A multi-man ladder match is scheduled, as well as a cinematic street fight involving the return of Sting.

Each match on AEW Revolution will be given a brief review and analysis. Then each match will be given a rating and be ranked from worst to best.

Matches Ranked from Worst to Best

8) Miro & Kip Sabian d. Orange Cassidy & Chuck Taylor
Miro and Kip Sabin attack Chuck Taylor and Orange Cassidy before the match. Sabin is dragged to the ring by Miro who busts him open and beats him down to start the match. Taylor is able to make a brief comeback as Orange Cassidy arrives and takes out Miro. Cassidy gets the tag, hits a suicide dive on Sabin before a diving DDT in the ring gets a two-count. Cassidy hits a stunner and an Orange punch on Miro. Miro absorbs the blows and takes out both Cassidy and Taylor. Miro locks in the camel clutch for the win on AEW Revolution.

Match Analysis: For the first time in his run in AEW, Miro looks like a monster. This felt like a standard TV match though. Skim It. **

Battle Royal

7) Death Triangle (Pac and Fenix) win the Casino Tag Team Royale (Royal Rumble Rules)
Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshal start things off with Ten and Five of the Dark Order. Next up is Santana and Ortiz of the Inner Circle as they gain control over both teams. Five is eliminated as the Sydals are in. Grayson and Evil Uno of the Dark Order are the next team as they work over the Sydals and eliminate Mike. The Gunn Club enters but are quickly cut off by the Dark Over while Matt Sydal is eliminated.

Peter Avalon and Cezar Bononi make their way in followed by The Varsity Blondes. Bear Country is next and they flex their power on the Varsity Blondes and The Dark Order. The Jurassic Express enter to a huge pop as they instantly take control. Butcher and The Blade, Private Party, SCU, Fenix and Pac and the rest of the Dark Order round out the field. The final four comes down to Pac and Fex, along with Joh Silver and Jungle Boy. Fenix tightropes his way to eliminate Silver. Jungle Boy pulls the top rope down to eliminate Pac. Incredibly fast sequence to the outside before a poison-rana back in the ring by Jungle Boy. Fenix bounces back and gets the win with a close line by Fenix.

Match Analysis: The first half or so was pretty standard and repetitive, but it got fun during the final four. Skim It. **3/4

AEW Women’s Championship Match:

6) Hikaru Shida (c) d. Ryo Mizunami
Chain wrestling to start before they exchange strikes in the corner. The action heads outside as Ryo catches Hikaru off an attempted chair launch and she’s tossed outside the ride. Back in the ring and Ryo maintains full control. They botch a corner spot before Hikaru hits a missile dropkick for a two-count. Awkward exchange from the top leads to a slow-moving cradle driver on the entrance ramp.

Suplex from the outside in from Hikaru to Ryo for another two-count. Ryo makes a comeback and gets a two off her own cradle driver. Ryo hits an Alabama Jam for it only gets another two-count. Hikaru makes a final comeback with a win after a knee strike. Britt Baker and Nyla Rose attack both women after the match before Thunder Rosa makes the safe.

Match Analysis: This match had some solid spots but there were just too many sloppy botches that were sprinkled around. Skim It. **3/4

Face of the Revolution Ladder Match

5) Scorpio Sky d. Cody Rhodes, Penta El Zero Miedo, Lance Archer, Max Caster, and Ethan Page
The winner of the ladder match becomes the #1 contender for TNT title. Ethan Page debuts as the mystery entrance in the ladder match. There’s no way to call this spot for spot so let’s just list a few highlights. Scorpio Sky hits a German Suplex on Penta while he’s holding the ladder. Penta launches off the ladder with a flipping plancha onto Caster and Rhodes. Penta hits a destroyer on the ladder to Rhodes who appears to be hurt.

Caster hits a sloppy sunset flip powerbomb from the top of the ladder. Archer hits a knee on Scorpio who walls through a ladder on the outside. Page climbs the ladder as Rhodes returns to whip everyone with his belt. Jake the Snake runs in and hits a short close line on Page before getting superkicked by Penta. Scorpio knocks Rhodes off the ladder and grabs the brass ring for the win.

Match Analysis: Usually ladder matches at worst are good, but this just felt slow and boring. Pretty clunky at times with a crowd that didn’t seem to care much. Skim It. **3/4

Big Money Match

4) “Hangman” Adam Page d. Matt Hardy
Adam Page gets the quick advantage as the action spills to the outside as Page slams Matt Hardy into the guardrail before launching himself with a closeline. Hardy is able to gain control while working over Page’s hand, slamming it into the steel steps. Back in the ring, Hardy continues to work over the hand before Page is able to get a quick two on a roll-up. Death Valey Driver by Page gets another two-count. The match goes back outside as Hardy hits a Twist of Fate on the floor.

Back and forth action leads to Page connecting with a moonsault from the top rope to the floor. Page hits the Dead Eye but the referee is distracted by Private Party. Buckshot Lariat is countered into a Side Effect and Twist of Fate for a two count. Dark Order is out to even the odds as Page wins it with the Buck Shot Lariat on AEW Revolution.

Match Analysis: Surprisingly good match as both men gave an A+ effort. Adam Page led the way but Matt Hardy more than held his own. Worth a Watch. ***

Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch

3) AEW World Championship: Kenny Omega (c) d. Jon Moxley
They lock up and attempt to push one another into the barbed-wire-wrapped ropes before exchanging strikes in the middle of the ring. Moxley closelines Omega over the one section of ripes without barbed wire before the action moves back in. Omega throws powder into the eyes of Moxley and then throws him into the barbed wire for the first explosion. They use a barbed wire chair as Moxley is whipped into a barbed wire board. Omega attempts a figure-four but is knocked into the explosions.

Kenny Omega shakes it off and attempts a snap-dragon suplex but Jon Moxley reverses it into a suplex through the barbed wire board. Moxley wraps his arm with barbed wite and hits a lariat. Paradigm Shift attempts as both men back up into the ropes for another explosion. After battling outside, Omega hits the One-Winged Angel but Moxley triggers an explosion with his foot to break the count. The Good Brothers appear to help beat down Moxley as Omega uses an exploding barbed wire bat for a two-count. Omega hits the One-Winged Angel on a chair for the win. After the match, Moxley is beaten down as the timer expires and the big explosion goes off but appears to be a dud.

Match Analysis: Some good spots but this felt awkward. They tease the big explosion at the end of the match but it never came. It’s comparable to an American remake of a Japanese horror film that is watered down with a terrible ending. Your mileage on this will depend on your tastes in wrestling. I’ve seen plenty of extreme matches and death matches and this was decent enough. Worth a Watch. ***

AEW Revolution: Cinematic Street Fight

2) Sting & Darby Allin d. Brian Cage & Ricky Starks
Brian Cage and Ricky Stark arrive at an abandoned warehouse with an old wrestling ring inside. Sting and Darby Allin arrive next along with dozens of masked men. Sting tosses Darby at Cage and Starks. Darby is thrown to the outside while Cage and Starks beat down Sting. Outside of the ring, Cage beats down Darby. Inside the ring and Sting hits a Stinger Splash and a Snake Eyes on Starks. Cage press slams Darby through a doorway on the other side of the warehouse. Sting closelines Starks out of the ring and grabs a bat as they make their way to the opposite end of the warehouse.

Brian Cage goes for a vertical suplex and carries Darby Allin up a flight of stairs before dropping him on a garbage can. Sting arrives to make the save as he and Darby chokeslam Cage through a table. The fight takes place throughout the entire warehouse as the rest of Team Taz appears to help Cage and Starks. Darby toses Sting his bat as he goes to work on all the members of Team Taz. Cage is then tossed off the balcony through a stage. Back in the ring and Sting finishes off Starks with a Scorpion Death Drop.

Match Analysis: For a cinematic match it was fun. It was shot well, with good-looking cinematography, insert shots and direction. It’s the type of match that plays well for the COVID era but probably not the best when you have a live crowd. I don’t give cinematic matches a star rating but depending on where you stand, it’s Worth a Watch.

AEW Revolution: Tag Team Title Match

1) AEW Tag Team Championship: The Young Bucks (c) d. Chris Jericho & MJF
The Young Bucks start quickly by taking it to Jericho and MJF as the match heads outside. Jericho and MJF get a brief advantage until the Bucks hit duel suicide dives. Back inside and the Bucks connect on double sunset flips into sharpshooters. The match finally stabilizes inside as Jericho is on the receiving end of offense from the Bucks.

Jericho and MJF exchange tags to keep the action in their favor. Hot tag from Nick Jackson who cleans house before the Bucks hit a powerbomb-neckbreaker for a two-count. Jericho locks the Liontammer on both Bucks before Matt is able to counter out of it. MJF makes the tag and gets a two off a sit-out powerbomb. Jericho hits Matt with a bat leading to MJF connecting with a Heat Seeker for another two-count. A double superkick on Jericho during a Lionsault before a double V-Trigger by the Bucks get a two. Super Kick Party onto MJF and a Meltzer Driver on Jericho for the win.

Match Analysis: Fun and exciting opening match as both teams have chemistry. Bucks getting the win seems like a good call to further the tension within the Inner Circle. Must-Watch. ****
