Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, won a long-fought battle on Thursday. The London High Court awarded in her favor. What was this lawsuit about and what does this mean for the future?
Meghan Markle Wins UK Tabloid Lawsuit
The Duchess of Sussex, better known as Meghan Markle, has won a tremendous victory. On Thursday, the London High Court ruled in her favor. According to Yahoo, this was regarding a lawsuit against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of The Mail on Sunday and MailOnline.
She sued the papers for publishing parts of a personal letter that she wrote to her father, Thomas Markle. In February 2019, the publication released five articles. The publications reproduced parts of her handwritten, personal letter to her father.
According to Judge Mark Warby, the distressed Duchess “had a reasonable expectation that the contents of the letter would remain private.” Because they were published in the papers, the articles “interfered with that reasonable expectation.” In addition the judge said that “taken as a whole the disclosures were manifestly excessive and hence unlawful.” He concluded that “There is no prospect that a different judgment would be reached after a trial.”
Yes, there will still need to be a trial over these published letters.
Meghan’s Legal Team Called This ‘Triple-Barreled’ Assault
In the written documents on this case, Meghan Markle’s legal team had stated that the Associated Newspapers printing parts of the letter was a “triple-barreled” assault. The three areas of Meghan’s life that were “assaulted” were “her private life, her family life and her correspondence.”

Meghan Markle Grateful
Meghan shared a statement. However, after stating that she was “grateful to the courts,” she had a few more things to say. In regards to the Associated Newspapers, Markle flatly stated that “for these outlets, it’s a game.” However, for Markle, this is all real life. Her life. She expressed how she has suffered deep anguish over the publication of her personal correspondence.
“For me and so many others, it’s real life, real relationships, and very real sadness. The damage they have done and continue to do runs deep.”
Associated Newspapers ‘Surprised’
Meanwhile, on the loser’s end, a spokesperson for the Associated Newspapers expressed surprise at the High Court ruling. They shared that they were “disappointed at being denied the chance to have all the evidence heard and tested in open court at a full trial.”
Above all, indicating that this is far from over, the spokesperson stated, “We are carefully considering the judgment’s contents and will decide in due course whether to lodge an appeal.”
In addition, they contend that with the articles, Thomas Markle was allowed to defend himself. Likewise, he wanted to respond to a People magazine article. This is whereMeghan’s friends spoke to the publication about their strained relationship.
Despite Meghan Markle’s joy at winning this first bit, a lot can happen.
