Murder mystery movies are uncommon to come across. It feels like Bodies Bodies Bodies is the first major one we’ve seen since the rousing success of Knives Out in 2019. Where Knives Out is more of a classy, traditional manor-style murder mystery, this movie sets itself up as a horror comedy that will keep you guessing. Does it succeed at this intriguing crossover?
Pete Davidson & Mysterious Murders
The most important aspect of any murder mystery is that it keeps you on your toes guessing for nearly the entire runtime. Bodies Bodies Bodies certainly succeeds at this in spades. It’s not necessarily impossible to figure out this movie’s killer before the big ending reveal. But, it’s pretty safe to say that most will be guessing through most of their first watch, and will be satisfied by the answer.
It’s also a horror comedy, and to that end, it doesn’t serve its genre quite as well. The dark sense of humor necessary in every horror comedy is certainly here. It’s deeply embedded into this movie’s plot and characters, and that’s where the humor works best. Where it tends to fall a little flat is in the moment-to-moment jokes, which are somewhat hit-and-miss. The dialogue at times feels like it’s trying so hard to sound “Gen-Z” that it winds up feeling like a parody of itself. In that same vein, it does do a fantastic job setting up tension between practically every character in the story. This is something necessary in a murder mystery to give the viewer a sense that almost anybody could have done it.
One of this film’s big selling points is its inclusion of Pete Davidson. The famous SNL comedian and recent boyfriend to Kim Kardashian only occasionally makes film appearances, and this is his first in a horror flick. He doesn’t do a bad job by any means, but he is one of those actors that essentially only has one character, and it’s hard to see him as anyone but Pete Davidson.
Final Score For Bodies Bodies Bodies
What truly makes this movie stand out is how seldom we get something like this. It’s certainly not perfect, but its uniqueness makes it stand out even through its rougher edges. Dutch director Halina Reijn makes a fascinating English debut with this film. Having both a woman writer and director makes this movie a rare case of a gory horror film with multiple well-rounded female characters. It’s certainly worth watching if you’re a fan of movies like Clue or Knives Out. And also worth watching if you’re a horror fan looking for a bloody good time with some dark humor.
The final score for Bodies Bodies Bodies: 7 out of 10.
