WWE NXT 6/1: Rating and Ranking Every Match

WWE NXT TakeOver: In Your House is less than a month away and the pieces are starting to fall into place. A number contender’s match for the WWE NXT Title took place between Johnny Gargano, Kyle O’Reilly and Pete Dunne on a loaded episode of NXT.

Every match on WWE NXT will include a highlight moment, what the storyline progression is, and a final analysis. Each match will be given a star rating and be ranked from worst to best.

Matches Ranked from Worst to Best

The Way (Indi Hartwell and Candice LeRae) d. Zoey Stark and Zayda Ramier
Highlight Moment: The Way is strong from the start as they beat down Zayda Ramier. After a brief comeback, LeRae hits the Wicked Stepsister on Ramier before Indi puts her away with Pretty Savage.

Storyline Progression: The NXT Women’s Tag Team is on fire right now and The Way are getting booked to make another run.

Final Analysis: Not much to see here as The Way heads to the pay window. Take a Pass. *1/2

WWE NXT: Cruiserweight Title Match

KUSHIDA d. Carmelo Hayes
Highlight Moment: Carmelo Hayes is the formerly known Christian Casanova. Hayes shines early with a springboard sit-out closeline, before hitting an arm drag and a dropkick combo. Kushida lays out Hayes with an open palm strike. KUSHIDA goes for a closeline but Hayes counters with a spinning DDT that gets a two-count. Hayes attempts a tilt-a-whirl but Kushida counters with a kick and strike. Both men trade several counters before KUSHIDA applies the Hoverboard Lock for the submission.

Storyline Progression: KUSHIDA has been establishing his cruiserweight title run well and continues on with the challenge of newcomer Carmelo Hayes.

Final Analysis: Solid match to keep KUSHIDA rolling while giving Hayes some shine in the process. Skim It. **3/4

Millon Dollar questions

Jake Atlas d. LA Knight
Highlight Moment: LA Knight gets the early advantage and gloats to the crowd before Jake Atlas to a near fall on a roll-up. Knight is able to regain the advantage, attempting the Million Dollar Dream to impressive Ted Dibiase on the outside of the ring. Cameron Grimes makes his way to ringside to serve as a distraction allowing Atlas to hit a cartwheel DDT from the top rope for the win.

Storyline Progression: Cameron Grimes and LA Knight have been battling for the assistance of Ted Dibiase. After Knight caused Grimes to look bad on last week’s WWE NXT, the tables were then turned on him.

Final Analysis: Fun match between these two as LA Knight continues to improve in the ring and adapt to the WWE NXT style. Worth a Watch. ***

WWE NXT: Triple Threat

Johnny Gargano vs Kyle O’Reilly vs Pete Dunne
Highlight Moment: All three men had time to shine to kick off WWE NXT. Pete Dunne pulls out a sweet spot with a double finger stomp on O’Reilly and Gargano at the same time. Johnny Gargano sets O’Reilly up for a tornado DDT while hitting a dropkick on Dunne off the apron at the same time. With Dunne on his back, O’Reilly nails Gargano with a double under hook DDT causing him to land on Dunne. Dunne attempts a pump handle slam but Gargano is able to counter it into a DDT for a near fall. With O’Reilly on the outside of the ring, Adam Cole appears at ringside to attack and cause a no contest.

Storyline Progression: With WWE NXT TakeOver: In Your House just weeks away, NXT Champion Karrion Kross is in need of a challenger. Enter Johnny Gargano, Kyle O’Reilly and Pete Dunne who battled it out for a shot at the title. After the interference of Adam Cole, WWE GM William Regal made a Fatal Five Way for the NXT Title at TakeOver: In Your House.

Final Analysis: Good match to kick off the show but you could tell they were holding back a bit before the bigger match at TakeOver. Still Worth a Watch. ***1/2

WWE NXT: Main Event

NXT Tag Team Title Match: MSK d. Legado Del Fantasma
Highlight Moment: MSK shines early and often with their wide range of high-flying moves but are met in that department by LDF. As Wilde is showboating, Lee connects with a backflip kick to the head. At one point, the Grizzled Young Veterans appear at ringside but are attacked by Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher. Wilde connects with a huricanranna into a powerbomb by Mendoza that gets a two-count.

Lee gets knocked to the outside of the ring as Escobar throws him into the steel steps at ringside before returning him to the ring. LDF hit a Russian Leg Sweep combo but it’s broken up by Carter. Bronson Reed makes his way down to the ring and hits an avalanche splash on Santos crushing him into the barricade. Back in the ring, Wilde is caught in a double-team neckbreaker for the MSK victory.

Storyline Progression: Legado Del Fantasmo have been one of the better-booked factions in wrestling. They had their shot at the tag titles on WWE NXT.

Final Analysis: Really good main event between both teams. It did feel like they dialed it back a bit to save it for the main stage. Worth a Watch. ***3/4
