WWE Smackdown 3/19: Rating and Ranking Every Match

Robby Steven

The Fastlane PPV is only days away so WWE Smackdown is in full go-home mode. Sasha Banks is scheduled to defend her Women’s Title against Nia Jack. In the main event, Edge will compete in his first Smackdown match in over a decade as he faces Jey Uso.

Every match on WWE Smackdown will include highlights, what the storyline progression is, and a final analysis. Each match will be given a star rating and be ranked from worst to best.

Matches Ranked from Worst to Best

6) Bianca Belair d. Shayna Baszler
Highlights: Sasha Banks appears before the match before Bianca Belair tells her to head to the locker room. Shayna Baszler gets the quick advantage as she knocks Belair to the outside. Nia Jax, still looking upset at Baszler, decides to walk to the back. Belair gets a two-count on Baszler before Natalya and Tamina run in to beat down both women causing a no-contest.

Storyline Progression: This was more to show the cracks in the tag team of Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler. Bianca Belair getting beaten down and looking weak just a few weeks before Wrestlemania is an interesting choice.

Final Analysis: Not much to see here. The entire angle surrounding this match is just not working for me. Take a Pass. DUD.

Women’s Title on the Line

5) WWE Smackdown Women’s Title Match: Sasha Banks d. Nia Jax
Highlights: After Sasha Banks was able to get control early on, Nia Jax used her power to gain the advantage. After a two-count by Jax, Bianca Blair came to ringside to cheer on Banks before the commercial break. Back from the break and Jax continues to use her power, including getting a two-count after swinging Banks’ head into the bottom turnbuckle. Baszler accidentally hits Jax allowing Banks to pick up the win.

Storyline Progression: WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Nia Jax and her partner Shayna Baszler have been on a roll as of late. As a result of Jax’s win in tag action over Sahsa Banks, she earned a match for the title on WWE Smackdown.

Final Analysis: The match was decent enough but the build for the Banks vs Belair match at Wrestlemania has been subpar at best. Banks is dominated by Jax all match long and then needs help from Baszler to get the win. It’s just not jiving. Take a Pass. *1/2

Sami’s Conspiracy

4) King Corbin d. Sami Zayn
Highlights: Sami Zayn continues to act as if there is a conspiracy against him. Zayn tries to rip the turnbuckle off until Corbin hits End of Days for the win.

Storyline Progression: Sami Zayn invites Kevin Owen to sit at ringside for his match so he could see what the conspiracy is all about. After the match, Owens says he didn’t see any conspiracy, much to the dismay of Zayn. As Zayn walks away, he rushes back and connects with a Heluva Kick on Owens.

Final Analysis: Not much of a match as it was over pretty quickly. This was all about building up to Owens vs Zayn, which should be fun. Skim It for the post-match altercation. *

WWE Smackdown: Tag Team Action

3) Rey and Dominik Mysterio d. The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford)
Highlights: The Dirty Dogs appear on commentary before the match. Fast-paced match between two teams who joined forces on last week’s WWE Smackdown. The Street Profits attempt a Doomsday Device before Rey knocks Dawkins off the top rope. Dominik is able to hit a hurricanrana pin combo for the victory.

Storyline Progression: After joining forces last week, the Mysterios took on The Street Profits in a rare face vs face team. After the match, Chag Gable and Otis come down to ringside to run down both teams. Gable and Otis get distracted by The Street Profits and are taken out by top rope splashes from Dominik.

Final Analysis: Fun little match but it didn’t last too long. Nice to see Rey getting some shine with his son. Skim It. **1/4

Mysterios’ 2nd Act

2) Chad Gable and Otis d. Rey and Dominik Mysterio
Highlights: Along with The Dirty Dogs, The Street Profits also join the commentary booth. Rey is quickly slowed down by the power of Otis before making a hot tag to Dominik. The younger Mysterio is able to get the best of Gable until Otis gets the tag. Rey is thrown into the barricade as Gable hits a rolling German suplex on Dominik. Otis connects with a big second rope splash for the win.

Storyline Progression: The tag match was made after the brawl following the Mysterio’s win over The Street Profits.

Final Analysis: Another short but sweet tag team match. WWE Smackdown is starting to get more organized with their tag division and it shows. Skim It. **1/2

WWE Smackdown: Main Event

1) Edge d. Jey Uso
Highlights: Daniel Bryan joins the commentary booth before the match. Edge, in sweet-looking black and blue gear, gets the better of Jey Uso early on with a ground attack. Edge gets knocked to the outside before getting hit with a flying elbow leading to a commercial break. Back from the break and Uso keeps the momentum on his side, working over Edge in and out of the ring. Edge makes several comebacks, but Uso targets his ribs to cut him off. Both men collide after a double crossbody. Edge catches Uso going up top before hitting a top rope hurricanrana. Edge goes for a spear but eats a superkick before Uso follows with a frog splash. Back up and Edge gets the win with a spear.

Storyline Progression: The winner of the match was granted the spot as an enforcer during the Roman Reigns vs Daniel Bryan Universal Title match at Fastlane. After the match, Reigns runs in to spear Edge. Bryan attempts to enter the ring but is cut off by Uso. In the ring, Reigns spears Bryan to close the show.

Final Analysis: Good match that did seem a bit slow, possibly to get Edge back into the flow of in-ring action. Worth a Watch. ***
