8 Ways You Can Make Gardening Affordable

A lot of people want to garden, but feel like it can be a very expensive habit to start. Thinking about buying plants, planters, soil, fertilizer and more can be a little bit overwhelming. Follow these eight ideas to make gardening actually affordable.

  1. Use seeds instead of plants. You can get seed really cheap. Yes they are a bit harder to get going and take a bit longer, but with the write TLC you can grow anything from just seeds and can find them for less than $1 a package sometimes.
  2. Find your tools used. You will want gloves, shovels and a few other things. Try buying them used online or at garage sales. This will really save you a lot of money. If you can’t find them used, run to Dollar General, Dollar Tree someone else cheap like that and get small tools at a discount.
  3. Make your own planters. You can make a planter out of about anything. Do you have old ties lying around? These make super cute planters, you can even paint them. Old bricks or lumber are also good to make your own planters.
  4. Regrow veggies from scraps or seeds from when you cook at home. You can use the seeds you get yourself or scraps of vegetables to regrow them on your own. This is basically free since you are cooking with them anyway.
  5. Collect your own rainwater. You can set up barrels to collect your own rainwater to use to water your plants. This can really save on the water bill for gardending.
  6. Buy the clearance plants. Just yesterday Lowe’s had their clearance plants on sale an extra 75% off. Yes these need a little bit of TLC to get them looking good again, but you can get things super cheap to start your garden.
  7. Make your own mulch. You can do this with shredded newspaper or by using grass clippings. This is a lot cheaper than buying it.
  8. Trade plants with your friends or people online. Someone might have way too much of something you want and let you dig up a few starters. Don’t be afraid to do the work.
