The Scream franchise is one of the most classic and long-standing in the horror genre. Since the first film in 1996, Ghostface has been thrilling audiences and selling a lot of theater tickets. Scream VI is the newest installment of the horror/comedy slasher and it follows up one of the highest-rated films in the franchise, Scream V. After all these years, does this franchise still excite people? Clearly, the answer is yes, and more than ever. Scream VI is breaking franchise records and exciting the horror world.
Scream VI Sweeps Theaters
The film had a domestic opening of more than 44 and a half million dollars on its first weekend in the US. That’s the highest domestic opening for any film in the franchise by a long shot. It glides effortlessly past what is now in second place, Scream 3 from 2000 with a 34 million dollar opening.
It’s worth noting that no Scream film has ever been a failure. Every single movie in the franchise has seen success, even the lowest-grossing, Scream 4, still had comfortable numbers over its budget. Scream VI is simply further proof that the decades have not reduced interest in this slasher classic. Especially when the quality is still consistently high. The movie currently sits at a Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score of 77% and an impressive audience score of 92%. It’s clear that the many iterations of Ghostface are in no way running out of steam, and these movies are still pumping out fresh and entertaining ideas.
Having the current goth it-girl, Jenna Ortega, on the cast certainly doesn’t hurt the hype, either.
The Future Of Ghostface
The Scream franchise was dormant for a long time before its revival in 2022 after 11 years since the previous film. It was only natural for the series to take a break after the death of horror legend Wes Craven. Craven was the director of the first four Scream films, and Scream 4 was actually his final work as a director before his passing in 2015.
Many were skeptical if these movies could ever be the same without his vision around the guide them anymore. The new directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett maintain respect for Craven’s spirit while putting their own flavor in these last two movies. It makes them feel like love letters to the series, and amazing additions to have.
There is no confirmation on a Scream VII just yet. However, Matt and Tyler have both expressed interest. Plus, this box office performance would suggest that the studio will have some interest as well. Horror films are clearly not going anywhere soon.
Scream VI is out in theaters worldwide now. Have you seen it yet? Let us know in the comments below.
