2022 felt like a soft reset for the film industry. The COVID-induced slump is over and we’re finally back to getting regular releases in the theaters again. The result is an onslaught of ideas from every direction this year, ranging in all kinds of genres. These are Entertainment Chronicle’s picks for the top 5 films among everything we got in 2022.
#5 – Prey
The Predator franchise was hardly justified in being a franchise at all until now. Prey feels like what we should have been getting from these movies all along. It’s a thrilling action film with good emotional depth. It also boasts a unique Comanche setting which is thankfully approached with taste. It takes the bottom of the top 5 films list for being a bit cliche at moments. But still a worthwhile watch, and a saving grace for Predator fans.
#4 – Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio
Guillermo Del Toro brought us a Pinocchio film this year that is as strange as it is enchanting and as haunting as it is endearing. Did you ever think to yourself “We need a dark Pinocchio adaptation with stop-motion animation that’s set in 1930s fascist Italy”? No? Well, it’s here anyways. Plus, even if we didn’t know we wanted it before, we’re definitely happy that it’s here now.
#3 – Turning Red
Turning Red sees Pixar officially leave its slump period of sequel after sequel and firmly settling back into what it does best. Endearing films with simple, but powerful stories that work at every level for all ages. Turning Red is funny, relatable to anyone who struggled with parental pressure, and nostalgic to all of the adults who grew up in the 00s.
#2 – All Quiet On The Western Front
Several have questioned the necessity of a new All Quiet On The Western Front adaptation following the already masterful 1930 film. The comparability of this adaptation to the older one is up to the viewer, ultimately. But, regardless, in 2022 it felt like a reminder was necessary for whom it is that war truly takes its largest toll. In that way, All Quiet On The Western Front is exactly what was needed in 2022. More so, it delivers its harrowing message in spades.
#1 – Everything Everywhere All At Once
It truly is difficult to describe Everything Everywhere All At Once. In the same breath, it is as silly as it is emotionally resonant to the point of tears. The narrative can be confusing, and the action is insane and over the top, but those things aren’t the purpose of the movie. All of the gratuitous and hilarious moments in this film are eye-catching distractions draped over the top of a fantastic story about family and discovering meaning in life. It has no reason to be as good as it is, but it is. The 2020s only just began, but it already has one of its most creative pieces of art.
