Upcoming Horror: 5 Scary Movies Releasing March 16-22

Two major upcoming horror movies will drop in theaters this week. A24’S latest offering in the form of ‘X’ will release on Friday. Sam Raimi produced ‘Umma’ will be in theaters on the 18th. Here is a list of five horror films that fans of the genre might want to take a look at over the next week.

Upcoming Horror:

Unwelcome- March 17 (VOD/Shudder)
Synopsis:
“A couple escapes their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland. The couple soon hear stories of mysterious beings who live in the ancient woods near their new garden.”

‘Unwelcome’ is an upcoming horror film from the UK directed by Jon Wright. Wright previously directed ‘Grabbers,’ therefore, has experience in the genre. ‘Unwelcome’ will see a limited theatrical run, so fans can expect a release on Shudder later this year.

A24 is back

X- March 18 (Theatrical)
Synopsis:
“At a secluded farmhouse in Texas, a film crew arrives to shoot an adult film. Their hosts, a reclusive elderly couple, take a special interest in their young guests. As night falls, after that, the couple’s leering interest turns violent.”

‘X’ is the latest upcoming horror film from A24, that specializes in the arthouse and independent style. The film stars Jenna Ortega and Brittany Snow, as well as Kid Cudi in a supporting role. Ti West is directing the project, similarly, having previously helmed genre favorite ‘House of the Devil.’

Umma- March 18 (Theatrical)
Synopsis:
“Amanda and her daughter are living a quiet life on an American farm. The remains of Amanda’s estranged mother arrive from Korea. After that, she soon becomes haunted by the fear of turning into her own mother.”

Starring Sanda Oh and Fivel Steward, director Iris K. Shim will deliver a potential sleeper hit in the horror community. Umma is expected to make some noise with the younger crowd due to its PG-13 rating.

Tethered- March 18 (VOD)
Synopsis:
“Miles from civilization, a blind teenager Solomon and the hunter he befriends are tormented by a mysterious creature lurking in the woods. Their only hope are clues on a tape-recorded message containing three mysterious rules.”

Director Daniel Robinette is given a chance to elaborate on his vision that was first a short film in 2017. The film will be available on-demand on Friday the 18.

Upcoming Horror: Social Commentary

Master- March 18 (Amazon Prime)
Synopsis:
“Two African American women at a predominantly white college in Massachusetts start to experience haunting activities ingrained in the history of the school.”

Amazon Prime has picked up the rights to Mariama Diallo’s ‘Master.’ The film is the latest horror movie to weave political and social commentary into the story, which is likely to divide audiences. The film has flown under the radar, so fans should remember to not sleep on this one.
