‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’: Ranking The Timelimes

Robby Steven

Netflix recently released the most recent entry into the ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ franchise. Directed David Blue Garcia, ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ 2022 acted as a legacy sequel, ignoring every entry in the franchise except the original film. The timelines in the franchise are vast and act as a choose your own adventure story at this point. With at least four potential timelines to choose from, it’s time to rank them.

‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’: Timelines Ranked

4) Reboot Timeline‘Leatherface’ (2017), ‘TCM’ (1974), ‘Texas Chainsaw’ 3D (2013)
There’s no denying that the original ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ is a classic, but that’s the only redeeming quality of this timeline. ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ was released in 2013 acting as a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper’s classic. After a promising retro opening that picked up at the events of the original film, it all went downhill from there. TC3D is full of horror cliches, a messy timeframe, bad CGI, and cringe dialogue. Four years later, the prequel ‘Leatherface’ was released to video. Following the early days of the titular character, ‘Leatherface’ resulted in a boring and uninteresting entry into the franchise.

3) Remake Timeline‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ (2003)
‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ remake trailer still holds up as one of the best nearly 20 years later. ]Taking the core of the original but turning it on itself head, the 2003 TCM became the prototype for the modern horror remake. Three years later, a prequel subtitled “The Beginning” was released. This prequel is done much better than ‘Leatherface’ but did feel a bit repetitive from its 2003 counterpart.

The Saw Is Back

2) Legacy Timeline- ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ (1974), ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ (2022)
This is where the list throws a curveball to many. The Tobe Hooper TCM stands on its own, but adding the 2022 film in the mix might catch some people by surprise. The horror community is split on the latest TCM movie, so it packs a punch and is tightly paced at just under 90 minutes. The gore, score, and cinematography are impressive from start to finish.

‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’: Classics Never Die

1) Original Timeline‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ (1974), ‘TCM 2’ (1986), ‘TCM 3’ (1990), ‘TCM: The Next Generation’ (1995)
It took twelve years for the sequel of the franchise to be released and it went in a much different direction. Tobe Hooper returned to the director’s chair but delivered a comedic take on the characters. The sequel has been loved and hated by fans but provides a unique entry.

In 1990, ‘TCM 3’ was released after a constant ratings battle with the MPAA and the studio. ‘TCM: The Next Gen’ has become a cult hit by its bonkers storyline, highlighting its two stars in the process. Matthew McConaughey and Renée Zellweger shot the film prior to becoming big stars which acts as a novelty.

The third and fourth films have been argued by fans that they aren’t within the same timeline. The opening narration of each film references the prior movies, linking them together just enough to stick.
